Spoilers: American Idol announced a first for its Judges’ Song Contest: a 1990s music theme. The Top 12 were set to perform songs selected by Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie on the episode scheduled for April 6, 2026. That date has passed. TGIF sitcom stars were also reported as lounge guests, but no individual guest names were confirmed in the announcement.
What was announced for the Season 24 contest?
The Season 24 contest was announced as the first themed edition, with contestants performing songs from the 1990s. The April 6 episode was scheduled to feature the Top 12 and judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. The March 30 announcement, republished by AOL, described the theme and planned guests.
Showrunner and executive producer Megan Michaels Wolflick had previewed the idea in a February 9, 2026 interview: “We’re going to do a themed version of the judges’ song contest this year with a bit of nostalgia with ’90s music, which will be great.” The interview was published by 979 VOK / ABC Audio.
Who were the special guests?
The announcement said stars from ABC’s 1990s TGIF sitcom lineup would spend time with contestants in the lounge. It cited Full House, Family Matters, Step by Step and Boy Meets World as examples of the lineup.

What is the Judges’ Song Contest?
TV Insider says the contest began in Season 20 in 2022. Each judge chooses a song, and contestants pick from the judges’ selections. The judge whose songs are chosen most wins bragging rights and can save one contestant from elimination. If judges tie, the tied judges decide together. TV Insider’s April 6, 2026 explainer describes the format and the Season 24 theme.
