At the abandoned house, River is revealed as another of Bestie’s online friends and kills Shelby. The betrayal turns Shelby’s search for connection into the episode’s central horror: the people offering belonging may be part of the same manipulation. That is a reading of the story, not a confirmed explanation from its creators.
Which episode is “Bestie”?
“Bestie” is the first episode of Season 3 of American Horror Stories, the anthology spin-off of American Horror Story. FX’s episode page describes its premise as a young woman seeking connection in a mysterious online friend after her mother’s death. Joe Baken wrote the episode and Max Winkler directed it.
Apple TV lists the episode as released on October 26, 2023, with a 52-minute runtime and a TV-MA rating, along with violence and language advisories. Hulu’s Fall 2023 slate presented that date as part of a four-episode Huluween event; that launch context is distinct from the additional installments now listed on FX’s series page.
What happens before the ending?
After her mother dies, Shelby seeks companionship online and becomes involved with Bestie. A recap reports that Bestie’s apparent encouragement gives way to pressure for Shelby to take risks. Following an injury, Shelby forms a friendship with River, a fellow student. This sequence comes from the recap; FX’s official synopsis establishes the bereavement and online connection, but does not detail those intervening events.

What happens at the end of “Bestie”?
River takes Shelby to an abandoned house that the recap identifies as Bestie’s home. Bestie appears, and River’s betrayal reveals that he is another of Bestie’s friends. River kills Shelby. The recap describes River staying with Bestie afterward; an episode summary independently reports the murder and reveal.
The account of the climax comes from plot summaries rather than a creator’s detailed explanation. The reported final image does not, by itself, establish whether the pair literally escape, whether it implies something else, or how viewers should understand the departure.
Why does River kill Shelby?
The episode’s events show River’s betrayal, but the available official material does not give a definitive account of when he became loyal to Bestie or what precisely motivates him. The clearest explanation is thematic rather than a confirmed statement of intent: Shelby’s offline friendship with River seems to offer a way out of isolation, but the reveal shows that her vulnerability has not put her beyond Bestie’s reach.
On that reading, Bestie’s influence extends beyond one online relationship. The story suggests that lonely people can be drawn into loyalty and harm by someone who appears to understand their need for connection. It does not establish the full extent of Bestie’s plan, so claims about a larger scheme or River’s exact motives go beyond what the ending confirms.
What the twist changes—and what it leaves open
- What the reveal establishes: River is connected to Bestie, and he kills Shelby at the abandoned house.
- What it changes: River’s apparent friendship no longer reads as a safe alternative to Bestie’s online influence.
- What remains uncertain: The episode summaries do not settle when River joined Bestie, the full scope of Bestie’s intentions, or the literal meaning of the reported final departure.
FX points viewers to Hulu for the series; availability can change and may vary by location. Apple TV also lists the episode.
