Ambedkar House in London reopened to the public on April 19, 2018, after two years of refurbishment, according to a report published that year by Scroll.in. That is a historical reopening date, not a current announcement: the High Commission of India says the house received museum status in March 2020 and is open to the public.
Why Ambedkar House matters
At 10 King Henry’s Road in Primrose Hill, B. R. Ambedkar lived while studying at the London School of Economics in 1921–22, according to the Telangana State Portal. The London residence is now a museum dedicated to preserving his legacy.
From private residence to public museum
The Government of Maharashtra purchased the house in 2015. Scroll.in reported the price as £3.1 million; the High Commission of India says it was inaugurated on November 14, 2015. Following two years of refurbishment, it opened to the public on April 19, as reported by Scroll.in in 2018.
The High Commission’s page, last updated September 1, 2026, says the house was given museum status in March 2020 and is open to the public. This later status confirms its role as a museum; it does not mean the 2018 reopening happened in 2026.

What the museum preserves
In 2026, the Telangana State Portal described the museum as preserving photographs, writings, and personal belongings associated with Ambedkar. It said the institution is dedicated to constitutionalism, equality, a casteless and oppression-free society, and social justice.
Exhibits described at the 2018 reopening
Scroll.in’s 2018 account described displays across the house’s floors: the basement served as a meeting room, while the ground, first, and second floors contained a photographic exhibition about Ambedkar. The first-floor library held his writings and included a reading space overlooking the garden. The report also noted a life-size statue in the backyard. These details describe the arrangement reported at the reopening and are not confirmation of the present-day floor plan or displays.
