She is especially worshipped during Navratri, a festival whose forms and customs vary by region and community.
Who is Ambe Maa?
Ambe Maa is a name used for the Divine Mother in Hindu devotion. BAPS identifies Shakti as also known as Amba, and India’s official Utsav portal includes Amba among the forms of Shakti worshipped during Navratri. These descriptions place Ambe within the wider Shakti and Durga traditions, though names and understandings of the Divine Mother can differ among Hindu communities.
The sources cited here do not establish one universal account of Ambe Maa’s scriptural identity or the historical origin of her name. It is therefore more accurate to describe her as a revered name or form of the Divine Mother than to claim that every Hindu tradition defines her in exactly the same way.
Is Ambe Maa the same as Durga Maa?
Ambe Maa and Durga Maa are closely associated in the Shakti tradition, but the names are not used identically in every community or context. The Utsav portal presents Amba as one form of Shakti worshipped during Navratri, while BAPS also identifies Amba with Shakti. This supports an association with the broader Durga tradition, not a single definition binding on all Hindus.

Why is Ambe Maa worshipped during Navratri?
Navratri is dedicated to the worship of the Divine Mother in her forms, including Shakti and Amba. Sharad Navratri falls in the Hindu month of Ashwin, usually in September or October, and its observance differs across India, according to India’s official Utsav portal. The festival provides a setting for devotion to the Goddess through local customs, prayer, music, dance, and other practices.
In Gujarat, Navratri is particularly associated with garba. BAPS describes devotees fasting and dancing around a murti of Shakti, whom it also calls Amba. These are examples of observance, not instructions or requirements that apply to every devotee.

How Navratri observances differ by region
Navratri is not celebrated in one uniform way. The Utsav portal notes regional differences, and the emphasis on garba is especially associated with Gujarati observance. Local customs may vary by region, temple, and community; the sources cited here do not rank one form as more authentic than another.
At the Shri Ambadevi Temple in Amravati, Maharashtra, the district government reports Navaratri celebrations. This is a specific example of worship at that temple; it should not be confused with other shrines dedicated to Amba or Ambaji.

In a Navaratri message published on 13 October 2024, the spiritual teacher Amma wrote: “The celebration of Navarātri is not to be limited to some external rituals. It should be considered as an intense spiritual practice.” This is Amma’s devotional reflection, rather than a universal rule for all Hindu communities.
