Is Amazon making a God of War show?
Yes. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have ordered two seasons of the series, made with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Amazon says production is underway, but has not announced when the show will premiere. Amazon’s official overview is the current source for its status and cast.

Why older stories name Ryan Hurst as Kratos
Ryan Hurst was announced as Kratos in earlier first-look coverage after Season 1 production began. Amazon’s current overview names Bautista instead. GamesRadar has reported Hurst’s departure and Bautista’s replacement; its account is a secondary report, while Amazon’s updated page is the current official cast listing. GamesRadar’s casting report and Amazon’s overview reflect those different points in the casting timeline.
What is the story about?
Amazon’s synopsis follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they travel to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother. Their journey tests and shapes their relationship: Kratos wants to teach Atreus to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father to be a better human. Amazon says the series will closely follow the last two games and focus on the father-son dynamic.

Which God of War games is the series based on?
The announced adaptation basis is the Norse-era pair God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. PlayStation identifies the former as a PS4 release and Ragnarök as a PS4 and PS5 release. The series is based on those games; that does not establish that every game plot point or character will appear onscreen. PlayStation’s franchise page covers the games.
Play the games behind the show
The games are already released, so viewers who want the story in order can start with God of War (2018) and then play God of War Ragnarök. PlayStation documents physical disc editions of Ragnarök for PS4 and PS5; format and availability vary by region and retailer. PlayStation’s Ragnarök page has game information.

Ronald D. Moore is showrunner, executive producer and writer. Frederick E.O. Toye is directing the first two episodes.
Amazon also lists executive producers Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia and Ben McGinnis are co-executive producers. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

When does the God of War show come out?
Amazon has not announced a premiere date in its overview current as of October 4, 2026. Production being underway does not confirm a release window. GamesRadar reported a planned production restart in mid-October 2026, but Amazon’s current page confirms production is underway without giving that schedule. GamesRadar’s report should be treated as secondary reporting, not an official premiere announcement.
