Amazon’s book sale ran April 23–28, 2025, overlapping Independent Bookstore Day on April 26. Amazon said the timing was unintentional; bookselling advocates criticized the collision. The dates are clear, but the available reporting does not establish that Amazon deliberately targeted independent bookstores.
What happened in 2025?
Amazon’s inaugural book sale took place in May 2024, according to Poets & Writers. The following year, Amazon’s sale ran April 23–28, and Independent Bookstore Day fell on Saturday, April 26. The overlap was reported contemporaneously by TechCrunch.
Amazon told TechCrunch: “The dates for our sale were set this year to accommodate additional participating countries.” That is the company’s explanation; it does not independently prove why the dates were chosen.
Why did booksellers object?
Independent Bookstore Day celebrates independent shops with store events and special releases. Because the Amazon sale coincided with that event, bookselling advocates argued that the timing could draw attention and purchases away from local stores.

American Booksellers Association CEO Allison Hill told Vulture, as quoted by TechCrunch: “At best it’s insensitive and at worst it seems like a tactic to hurt small businesses.” Bookshop.org CEO Andy Hunter also condemned the timing, saying those responsible “should be ashamed.” These are criticisms of the decision, not evidence that Amazon intended to harm independent bookstores.
In a later Poets & Writers feature, Hunter said Bookshop.org sales “spiked 340 percent that day,” referring to Independent Bookstore Day during the 2025 overlap. He also said some bookstores reported sales 50 percent above the prior year. These figures are attributed reports, not audited measurements of the overall independent-bookstore market; the stores behind the latter figure were not named.

When is Independent Bookstore Day?
The American Booksellers Association holds Independent Bookstore Day on the last Saturday in April. The 2026 event was April 25, its 13th anniversary. The ABA’s 2026 announcement described a searchable store map, exclusive books and merchandise, and Spirit Week activities.
The ABA named Bookshop.org and Libro.fm as 2026 event partners. Bookshop.org’s free standard shipping promotion was listed for April 25–26, while Libro.fm’s audiobook sale ran April 20–26. Both promotions have expired; they are not current offers. Details appeared in the ABA’s event promotions and planning information.

How can readers choose where to buy books?
The choice is not only about the lowest listed price. Amazon’s event was a limited-time discount sale, while independent bookstores offer other reasons to shop with them. Prices and available offers vary, and the cited reporting does not establish that independent stores match Amazon’s discounts.
- Buy from a local independent bookstore: Check its website or contact the shop about a title, ordering options, and events. Booksellers interviewed by Poets & Writers described browsing, personal service, events, and community ties as strengths; the experience varies by store.
- Order online through a bookstore-supporting retailer: Bookshop.org is identified in the reporting as a service supporting independent bookstores. Check its current terms and how orders are handled before buying.
- Consider format: Compare print books, ebooks, and audiobooks according to what is available through the seller you choose. Libro.fm is an audiobook service named as an ABA event partner; verify current availability and terms directly.
Independent Bookstore Day can be a reason to discover a nearby shop, but readers can support bookstores throughout the year. Local participation, stock, and events differ, so check with the individual store.

Amazon separately announced Prime Big Deal Days for October 6–7, 2026, saying thousands of print-book deals would be included, with discounts up to 65 percent. That is a different event, not a continuation of the 2025 sale. See Amazon’s September 14, 2026 announcement and check live terms for current offers.
