Veteran producer Fred Gaudelli was also named executive producer. The announcement set the lead booth for Prime Video’s first full season of exclusive national NFL coverage, which began September 15, 2022.
What Amazon announced in March 2022
The hiring made Michaels and Herbstreit the lead voices of Prime Video’s NFL broadcasts: Michaels on play-by-play, Herbstreit as analyst. Amazon also brought in Fred Gaudelli, a longtime NFL television producer, to oversee the broadcast. Reports had anticipated the announcer pairing before Amazon confirmed it, but the March 23 announcement established the official lineup. GeekWire’s contemporaneous report covered the announcement, while Amazon’s announcement of its first-quarter results identified Gaudelli and the planned launch date.
Why the pairing mattered
Al Michaels brought a familiar prime-time NFL voice
Michaels had most recently been associated with NBC’s Sunday Night Football and had called 11 Super Bowls by the time Amazon announced his hiring. His career also included major events in baseball, basketball, hockey and the Olympics. For a streaming service taking over a prominent national NFL package, his recognizable voice and extensive prime-time experience offered continuity for viewers used to network football broadcasts. Kirk Herbstreit added an analyst’s perspective
Herbstreit, a former Ohio State quarterback, had become a prominent college-football analyst for ESPN and ABC beginning in the 1990s. His Prime Video job was game analysis, not play-by-play. The combination paired Michaels’ NFL broadcasting experience with Herbstreit’s established football-analysis profile. Contemporaneous coverage reported that Herbstreit’s ESPN arrangement allowed him to work NFL games for Amazon; that reporting describes the arrangement at the time, not a guarantee about the terms of any later contract. Amazon did not disclose the announcers’ compensation or individual contract terms. Reports comparing Michaels’ deal with other broadcasters’ pay were not confirmation from Amazon and should not be treated as established contract figures.
The NFL rights deal behind the booth
Amazon had streamed NFL coverage before 2022. The change that season was that Prime Video became the exclusive national home for the league’s Thursday Night Football package, a major season-long arrangement with a streaming service. The NFL rights agreement was described as an 11-year deal; the original annual package was 15 regular-season games and one preseason game. Those figures describe the arrangement at its launch, not every later season’s schedule. The deal was set out in Amazon’s 2021 first-quarter earnings release, and the original package size was reported by GeekWire.

That shift made the booth more than a personnel announcement. A streaming platform was becoming the exclusive national distributor of a recurring NFL package, rather than simply supplementing television coverage. A veteran lead announcer and a high-profile analyst could help make that change familiar to football viewers, while Prime Video also offered interactive and data-driven presentation options. This was a strategic rationale for the pairing, not proof of a particular business outcome.
The rest of the original 2022 broadcast operation
The lead booth was part of a larger team announced for the launch. Roles and personnel have changed over time, so this is the original 2022 lineup, not a claim about every later season.

Prime Video also offered alternate presentations, including Prime Vision with Next Gen Stats and a Spanish-language feed. Amazon described interactive features such as X-Ray and Next Gen Stats powered by AWS in its 2022 announcement about Prime member experiences. When the broadcasts began
The hiring announcement came on March 23, 2022. The first regular-season game in the exclusive Prime Video package followed on September 15, 2022: the Los Angeles Chargers at the Kansas City Chiefs. The launch date was included in Amazon’s announcement. The distinction matters: Amazon had streamed NFL games before, so this was the beginning of the exclusive regular-season package, not Amazon’s first NFL stream.

How viewers could watch—and what “exclusive” meant
For the core U.S. package, viewers could use the Prime Video app or website on supported smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, phones, tablets and computers. Amazon’s viewing guide explains its device options. Distribution has also included additional routes at different times, such as Twitch, local over-the-air broadcasts in participating teams’ home markets, and NFL+ access on phones and tablets. These options do not make the services interchangeable: availability varies by game, device and location, and the national Prime Video package is a U.S. offering. International and local-market access can differ.
Accordingly, “exclusive” describes the national rights package, not a promise that no viewer could watch a game through any other outlet. The exact alternatives depend on the market and season.

Where the booth stands now
Amazon’s current 2026 Thursday Night Football schedule lists Michaels and Herbstreit as returning members of the booth for Prime Video’s fifth TNF season, with Kaylee Hartung as sideline reporter. That later status should be kept separate from the original 2022 announcement. Amazon’s schedule has also expanded beyond the original 15 regular-season games and one preseason game, with later coverage including additional events such as holiday games and a Wild Card game.
