Amazon Elastic Transcoder support ended on November 13, 2025. AWS says users can no longer access its console or resources, so the practical replacement for file-based video processing is AWS Elemental MediaConvert. For live-video encoding, AWS points to AWS Elemental MediaLive instead. The right migration is to rebuild and validate your workflow—not assume a one-click conversion will reproduce it.
Choose a replacement based on what you process
| Workload | AWS service to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Uploaded or stored video files that need transcoding, packaging, or other processing | AWS Elemental MediaConvert | AWS recommends MediaConvert for file-based video processing. |
| Live-video encoding | AWS Elemental MediaLive | AWS identifies MediaLive for live video; MediaConvert is not the live-encoding replacement. |
These are workload distinctions, not a guarantee that either service will reproduce your existing outputs without configuration work. Confirm required codecs, formats, captions, encryption, audio handling, and integrations against the target service’s current capabilities.
What changes with MediaConvert
Capabilities to verify
AWS’s 2025 migration article describes MediaConvert as supporting resolutions up to 8K and frame rates up to 120 FPS, along with HEVC, Apple ProRes, AV1, Dolby Audio, CMAF outputs, captions, overlays, scaling, and audio normalization. These are AWS capability claims; check current regional and service documentation for the particular settings your workflow requires.
Throughput, operations, and cost
AWS says MediaConvert is optimized for processing more files in parallel and offers accelerated transcoding as an option. Whether that meets your turnaround target depends on your jobs, queueing, and configuration, so model representative workloads rather than treating the vendor description as a performance guarantee.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AWS describes on-demand pricing based on output duration and characteristics, Basic and Professional tiers, per-second billing, volume discounts, and reserved pricing. The reserved option described in the migration article involves a 12-month commitment. Use current region-specific pricing and representative jobs to estimate your bill; a starting rate is not a reliable estimate for an individual workflow.
How to migrate an Elastic Transcoder workflow
- Inventory what the old workflow did. Record source locations, output destinations, formats, codecs, resolutions, frame rates, packaging, captions, encryption or DRM, overlays, audio processing, file naming, notifications, retries, and downstream playback requirements. Include job presets and templates, as well as the permissions and event handling around them.
- Locate configuration records you already have. Check exported settings, infrastructure definitions, deployment records, backups, and copies held by your team. Do not assume the old console or service API remains available: AWS says access to Elastic Transcoder resources ended with the service on November 13, 2025.
- Map each workflow to MediaConvert settings. Recreate the corresponding jobs, presets, and templates, then account for storage paths, permissions, and integrations. AWS’s migration guidance discusses integrations with S3, SNS, SQS, and CloudWatch; retain only the pieces your workflow actually uses.
- Use conversion scripts only if you already have the inputs they need. AWS Samples provides scripts for converting preset and job settings. The sample README says they call the Elastic Transcoder API to retrieve resources; because the service has been discontinued, do not count on them to retrieve settings now. Treat any converted configuration as a starting point, not as a finished migration.
- Run representative jobs and compare results. Check output playback and metadata against the old workflow’s requirements, including captions, encryption, image overlays, audio behavior, naming, notifications, and downstream consumers. Test failure handling and retries as well as successful jobs.
- Update production consumers after validation. Switch applications, event handlers, and delivery paths only after the replacement outputs and operational behavior meet your requirements. Keep a record of the new settings and dependencies for future recovery.
Migration pitfalls and recovery limits
- Assuming the preset-conversion scripts can fetch old settings: the AWS Samples README describes calls to the Elastic Transcoder API, which is no longer available after shutdown. Start with configuration exports and backups instead.
- Matching only the video codec: packaging, captions, DRM, overlays, audio, storage destinations, and notifications can be equally important parts of a working pipeline.
- Assuming a capability list guarantees an equivalent result: validate actual output settings and downstream playback; AWS’s feature descriptions do not establish a one-click or guaranteed migration.
- Missing operational dependencies: include IAM permissions, S3 paths, SNS/SQS events, CloudWatch monitoring, retry behavior, and application consumers in the migration plan where applicable.
- Unable to access old configurations: AWS’s public guidance does not establish a universal post-shutdown recovery method. Contact AWS Support for account-specific questions; recovery cannot be promised.
When to get migration help
Teams with many presets, production dependencies, or strict playback and compliance requirements may need implementation assistance. AWS’s migration material lists partners, but current regional availability and each provider’s scope are not established here. Verify both directly before choosing a partner.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream—not to transcode files for an application—StreamNeo is a separate option for that different job. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the upload from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts or file-transcoding workflows. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
