Those events do not establish a private diagnosis or explain one another; the clearest account is a dated chronology that distinguishes reporting, allegations and attributed statements.
What were Amanda Bynes’s reported legal troubles?
The Guardian’s 2022 retrospective describes DUI and other legal incidents in 2012 and 2013, before the conservatorship. That is a secondary summary, not a review of court dockets or disposition records. It does not support treating every reported incident as a conviction or drawing conclusions about the outcomes of individual cases. The Guardian’s account.

How did the conservatorship begin and continue?
2013: Temporary appointment
ABC News reported that Bynes’s mother, Lynn Bynes, was appointed temporary conservator in 2013 after Bynes was hospitalized on an involuntary psychiatric hold following an alleged small fire in a driveway. The fire was described as alleged; that report does not establish a diagnosis or a cause for the legal incidents reported earlier. ABC News’s account of the conservatorship.
October 2014: Conservator appointed again
ABC News reported that Lynn Bynes was appointed conservator again in October 2014. The arrangement remained in place until the court’s 2022 order.

Why did the conservatorship end in 2022?
In February 2022, Bynes petitioned to end the conservatorship of her person and estate. ABC News reported that court papers cited a capacity declaration, her schooling and her participation in a structured living community with check-ins and random toxicology screenings. These are details attributed to the petition as reported by the outlet, not independent medical findings.
On March 22, 2022, Judge Roger L. Lund terminated the nearly nine-year conservatorship, according to ABC News. Bynes’s lawyer, David A. Esquibias, said the court had been given evidence that judicial supervision was no longer required; her parents supported ending the arrangement. That description of the evidence came from her lawyer, rather than a quoted judicial finding. ABC News reported on the petition and termination.

What did Bynes say after the court’s decision?
In a statement released through her attorney after the termination, Bynes said: “In the last several years, I have been working hard to improve my health so that I can live and work independently, and I will continue to prioritize my well-being in this next chapter.” The Los Angeles Times attributed the statement to Bynes. It expresses her stated goals; it is not a clinical assessment. The Los Angeles Times’s report.

ABC News reported that Bynes was transported to a hospital on a California 5150 hold in March 2023 after a medical call in Los Angeles. A hold is a dated event, not a public diagnosis, and the report does not establish her current health or treatment. ABC News’s report on the hold.

What the public record does—and does not—show
- Reported legal incidents should not be presented as convictions without evidence of the specific case outcomes.
- A conservatorship’s existence does not, by itself, establish a diagnosis; its termination does not establish that all health challenges ended.
- A temporary involuntary hold is not equivalent to a diagnosis or an account of someone’s present private circumstances.
- The available reporting gives a chronology of public events and attributed statements, not a basis for claiming that one event caused another.
