After ALS took away musician Patrick Darling’s natural voice, old recordings helped him and speech therapist and researcher Richard Cave create an AI version he could use to sing. It was not a perfect copy—and it did not reverse ALS—but it gave Darling a way to perform again with his former bandmates in London in February 2026.
How did an ALS musician sing again with AI?
Darling had been making music since he was about 14. He first performed with Nick Cocking’s Ceili House Band in April 2014. As his ALS progressed, he began needing to sit during performances in August 2023. By April 2024, he struggled to talk and breathe at the same time; his last performance with the band was in June 2024, according to MIT Technology Review’s February 2026 account.
A speech therapist initially raised voice banking: recording someone’s speech so it can later be played from typed text or a communication device. Darling felt his voice had already changed, so banking it then would preserve a voice that no longer felt like his. Cave instead helped create a speaking voice clone using older recordings. The project then took on a different challenge: giving that recreated voice the ability to sing.
Darling returned to the stage with former bandmates in London on February 11, 2026. Speaking through his clone, he said, “Sadly, I have lost the ability to sing and play my instruments.” He also described how composing and producing music still mattered to him: “Doing so feels more important than ever to me now.”

Can AI recreate a singing voice from old recordings?
It did in Darling’s case, but the recordings were far from studio-quality. The team had no clean, high-quality archive of his singing. They worked with phone videos captured in noisy pubs and a couple of recordings made in his kitchen. Cave described the result as raspy and imperfect, but human-sounding; it was not identical to Darling’s former voice.
MIT Technology Review reported that the tool typically requires around 10 minutes of clear audio. That is a reported typical requirement, not an independent benchmark for voice cloning in general. Darling’s singing voice drew on lower-quality clips, so his experience should not be taken as proof that any system can reliably produce a convincing singing voice from noisy recordings.

Darling said the first time he heard the speaking voice clone, he thought it was amazing and that it sounded like his earlier voice. The singing reconstruction was a separate, less polished result. ElevenLabs later published its own account of Darling performing “Polish Girl with the Irish Heart” at SXSW London, using a singing voice built from his voice; that account is the company’s description of the event, not an independent evaluation.
Voice banking, voice cloning and communication tools are different
These approaches can serve different needs. Voice banking records speech in advance, while a clone is generated from existing audio. Neither should be confused with the communication system a person may use to speak day to day.

ElevenLabs’ product documentation distinguishes Instant Voice Cloning, which it says can use short samples, from Professional Voice Cloning, which it says requires extended training audio and a higher plan. These are changing vendor specifications; check the current product documentation before relying on them.
Can people with ALS get free AI voice access?
ElevenLabs says people with permanent speech change or loss may apply for free access through its Impact Program. Its October 2025 application guide describes a five-year renewable Pro license for eligible individuals and a one-year renewable license route for clinicians. The guide lists ALS/MND partners by region, so eligibility and the route to apply depend on location and current program terms. The company’s help page also says people with permanent speech loss caused by conditions including ALS may apply.

The performance was a personal creative achievement, not evidence that AI reverses ALS or restores biological speech. A clone can provide a synthetic voice, but it does not treat the condition or resolve the physical difficulties that may accompany it. Gabi Leibowitz, a speech therapist involved in the program, said the tool was not improving communication speed or the physical challenges of eating and breathing; she described its value as giving people a way “to create again, to thrive.”

Everyday communication, preserving a recognizable speaking voice and recreating singing are distinct goals; the available recordings, desired use, and local program eligibility all affect what may be possible.
