What does “almost EGOT” mean?
EGOT is shorthand for winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. “Almost EGOT” generally describes someone who has won three distinct award types from that set but not the fourth. Multiple wins in one category do not make up for a missing award type.

The term is commonly attributed to actor Philip Michael Thomas in late 1984, though that origin is best described as an attribution rather than a definitively documented first use. ABC News / Good Morning America explains the acronym and names current candidates.
Which stars have three of the four awards?
In a March 13, 2026 report, ABC News identified Cynthia Erivo, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Hugh Jackman as three-of-four recipients. Each is in the group missing an Oscar, according to the report’s competitive-award framing.

These are examples, not a complete or permanent roster. The available reporting does not establish a current official census of everyone one award short, and the candidate list can change after each awards season.
Why different lists of almost-EGOT winners disagree
The clearest way to compare candidates is to count competitive awards from the four institutions. Lists expand when they also count special, honorary, technical or other noncompetitive recognitions. Award categories do not line up perfectly across institutions, and some honors are shared by a group or credited to producers and other collaborators.
For context, a Wikipedia EGOT page citing a July 2025 snapshot lists 75 living people one award away under its competitive-only framing. That is a dated, scope-dependent secondary-source figure, not a current official count. Broader lists that include noncompetitive awards use a different eligibility rule; neither approach should be presented as a universal total.
Also, “stars” does not mean only performers. People can qualify through composing, producing, writing, directing or shared production credits. The missing award—not fame or perceived likelihood of winning—is the useful way to group candidates.
Steven Spielberg has completed his EGOT
Do not include Steven Spielberg among current almost-EGOT candidates. The Recording Academy’s results coverage records his first Grammy, for producing Music by John Williams, on February 1, 2026. ABC News reported that the win completed his EGOT. The award result is available from the Recording Academy’s 2026 Grammys winners and nominees list.

Because the list changes and depends on counting rules, check each person’s credits against the award organizations’ records before treating a roster as definitive. Official search tools include the Tony Awards past winners and nominees search, which covers awards from 1947 onward; the Television Academy’s nominees and winners database; and the Recording Academy’s results page linked above. State whether a list counts only competitive awards or includes special and honorary recognition, and give the date it was checked.
