Alma Matters: Inside the IIT Dream benefits from its filmmakers’ familiarity with IIT Kharagpur, but that intimacy is also the source of its central limitation. In Nandini Ramnath’s review for Scroll, access to students and staff does not consistently become the critical distance needed to examine the pressures and inequities the series raises.
What is Alma Matters about?
The three-part documentary series Alma Matters: Inside the IIT Dream follows student life at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. Directors Pratik Patra and Prashant Raj are former students of the institute. The series moves between academic demands, life beyond class, campus activities and students’ ambitions for job placements, while also touching on crowded classrooms and student suicides, as described in Ramnath’s 2021 Scroll review.
Rotten Tomatoes describes the first season as a May 2021 documentary about the competitive world of the IITs and lists Netflix as a place to watch. That listing does not establish current availability in every country; check Netflix in your region for the present catalogue status. Rotten Tomatoes’ season page
Why does the insider perspective help?
Ramnath’s review credits the directors’ connections to IIT Kharagpur with helping them get members of the campus community to speak openly. Students, teachers and administrators appear in a portrait that reaches beyond lectures and exams to the social life and ambitions shaped by the institute. The alumni perspective gives the filmmakers access to a world that can be difficult to capture from outside.

But access and analysis are not the same thing. A candid account of campus life can reveal what students experience without fully explaining the forces behind those experiences—or asking what remains unsaid.
What does the review say the series leaves underexamined?
Ramnath’s main criticism is that the documentary raises consequential subjects without probing some of them far enough. The review points to casteism and reservations, parental pressure, academic stress and student suicides as issues that call for more context and sustained inquiry. Its objection is not that these subjects are absent, but that their treatment does not always match their weight.
That distinction matters: Alma Matters is presented as an intimate account of life inside one institute, not as a comprehensive investigation of every structural issue affecting IIT students. Still, when a series brings up inequity or suicide, viewers may reasonably expect it to follow the subject beyond testimony and offer a clearer sense of causes, consequences and institutional context. Ramnath’s assessment is a critic’s judgment of the series, not an independently measured finding about campus life.
How does the director’s aim differ from the criticism?
In an interview with OTTplay, co-director Prashant Raj addressed the outsider-perspective critique. The interview headline quotes his rationale: “An outsider’s perspective is missing from Alma Matters because we wanted to tell an authentic story about IITians.” OTTplay’s interview with Prashant Raj

That aim helps explain the film’s point of view, but it does not resolve Ramnath’s objection. An insider account can be authentic to its participants and still leave viewers wanting more context or sharper questioning. ThePrint’s opinion piece makes a related criticism, arguing that the documentary does not fully contextualise what students say—or leave unsaid. That is a separate critical interpretation, not neutral confirmation of Ramnath’s review. ThePrint’s commentary

Watch it for an insider-led view of student life at IIT Kharagpur: its academic pressures, campus routines and ambitions, as well as the perspectives of people who live and work there. Approach it as a partial portrait rather than a searching account of every difficult issue it introduces. The series’ closeness to its subjects is both its documentary strength and, in Ramnath’s view, the reason it needed more outsider curiosity.
