Dickey Betts described Jimmy Carter as “a guide to us” in an interview reportedly conducted in February 2023, more than a year before Betts died. That short phrase sits within a relationship the Allman Brothers Band traced to Carter’s years as Georgia’s governor: a bond shaped by friendship, music and benefit concerts for his 1976 presidential campaign. The available report does not establish the full context of Betts’s remark, so its meaning should not be expanded beyond the words reported.
What did Dickey Betts say about Jimmy Carter?
The report’s title quotes Betts describing Carter as “a guide to us.” It identifies the source as a previously unpublished Rolling Stone interview conducted in February 2023. Betts died in 2024, aged 80, so the remark comes from an interview recorded while he was alive—not from a new comment after Carter’s death. The Associated Press described Betts as an Allman Brothers Band co-founder, co-lead guitarist with Duane Allman and writer of “Ramblin’ Man.” (Associated Press)
The full interview passage is not available in the report, so it is not possible to say what question Betts was answering or precisely what he meant by “guide.” The phrase is best read alongside the band’s documented history with Carter, not treated as evidence for a more specific political or personal claim. How did Carter and the Allman Brothers Band meet?
The band says its members first met Carter in 1974, when he was Georgia’s governor. Their connection continued long after his presidential campaign: the band describes a friendship lasting five decades and says Carter remained close to its members after leaving office. (Allman Brothers Band)

Carter expressed that connection publicly in the band’s remembrance: “I’m proud of my relationship with the Allman Brothers Band. They are good people, they are my friends, and anybody who wants a president who doesn’t like music like this should just simply vote for another man.” The statement joins affection for the musicians with a candid presentation of his musical tastes. (Allman Brothers Band)
What role did the band play in Carter’s 1976 campaign?
The Allman Brothers Band says it held benefit concerts that helped keep Carter’s 1976 presidential campaign financially viable. The Guardian’s later republication of Chris Charlesworth’s 1976 report places those performances in a broader network of support from rock musicians and Capricorn Records, whose head, Phil Walden, was linked to Carter and the campaign. The Guardian page appeared in 2012; it republishes reporting from the campaign era. (The Guardian)

Carter later recalled the fundraising in remarks at a 2016 Mercer University ceremony, as reported by Oxford American in 2023. He said the band charged $15 for admission and that the campaign received the ticket price plus $15 in matching funds—$30 for each attendee, by his account. He called the musicians “the best fundraisers that we had” and said, “Gregg Allman and the Allman Brothers just about put me in the White House.” These are Carter’s recollections of the arrangement, not an independently audited campaign total; they do not establish the band’s aggregate contribution. (Oxford American)
The band likewise attributes to Carter a recurring line: “The Allman Brothers helped put me in the White House by raising money when I didn’t have any.” It captures how he publicly remembered their campaign support, while the specific per-attendee figures remain his account. (Allman Brothers Band)

Why does Betts’s phrase matter in a documentary context?
“A guide to us” is Betts’s description, not a detailed account of what Carter advised the band or how he influenced its members. What can be established is a relationship that crossed the boundary between politics and music: Carter befriended the musicians, their performances raised money for his campaign, and he continued to speak warmly about them afterward. That history gives the phrase context without supplying details the reported excerpt does not provide.
Oxford American also connects Carter’s musical life to the documentary Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President, quoting his view that “Music is the best proof that people have one thing in common.” The film offers context on Carter’s musical interests and relationships with musicians; it is not the source of Betts’s remark.
