Allison Williams recalled that Lena Dunham and Girls executive producer Jenni Konner acted out the moment they had in mind for a sex scene involving Williams’s character, Marnie, and Desi, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Williams pictured Konner leaning over a windowsill as Dunham stood behind her and said, “This is what we picture.” The recollection comes from Williams’s 2025 podcast interview, as reported by Us Weekly; it is not an independently verified production record.
What Williams said Dunham and Konner demonstrated
Williams’s account was about the creators showing her the intended physical staging of a fictional scene—not the actors performing the scene’s sexual act in real life. She recalled Dunham and Konner acting out the moment involving Marnie and Desi, and said the preparation seemed like work that should have been handled by someone else while the two were occupied with other responsibilities.
Williams also reflected that an intimacy coordinator would have been helpful on a show with many sex scenes to prepare. She said, “It would have been so helpful to have someone who’s, like, [the] department head of sex scenes,” describing the value of discussing boundaries and details before filming. This is her retrospective view, not evidence that a specific rule or industry standard applied to the production at the time. Us Weekly’s 2025 coverage also reports that Dunham said in a 2022 interview that she would have liked an intimacy coordinator on Girls.
How Dunham separately described the scene’s development
In a 2017 interview, Dunham gave a distinct account: she said the script called for Marnie to be eaten out from behind, while Moss-Bachrach made a different acting choice on set. Dunham said Williams saw the scene as a moment of character growth and abandon. These are Dunham’s recollections of the writing and filming, not independently documented production details. The 2017 interview describes that account.

The two recollections address different parts of the scene’s history. Williams’s later story concerns Dunham and Konner demonstrating the moment they pictured; Dunham’s earlier account concerns what the script specified and how Moss-Bachrach played the scene on set.
Why the scene mattered to the story
At a 2015 PaleyFest panel, Dunham said Girls tried to use sex to advance character and plot rather than make it gratuitous. She described Marnie as especially vulnerable in the episode. Williams explained the scene’s compressed storytelling this way: “In 12 seconds you’re brought up to speed about where Marnie is emotionally, physically—it’s so economical.” Those remarks are the participants’ explanations of the scene’s narrative purpose. The PaleyFest panel coverage reports their comments.
