Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light won the 2024 Cannes Grand Prix with a measured story about three women whose lives intersect through hospital work in Mumbai. Its attention to friendship, private desire, labor and housing gives the film its quiet force; calling it a “masterpiece” is a critical judgment, not a universal verdict.
What is All We Imagine as Light about?
The film follows Prabha, a nurse whose routine is disrupted by a gift from her estranged husband; her younger roommate Anu, who looks for privacy with her boyfriend; and Parvaty, a colleague facing eviction. Their work and friendship connect intimate choices to the practical pressures of city life. The Cannes synopsis describes the story’s shift to a beach town, where the women’s desires have room to emerge. The Cannes film listing names Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam and Hridhu Haroon among the cast.
Their everyday struggles do not sit apart from politics. Criterion frames the film around friendship, personal and material struggle, gentrification and rising Hindu nationalism. Film at Lincoln Center points to Parvaty’s eviction, Prabha’s distant husband and Anu’s secret romance with a Muslim man as pressures shaping the women’s lives. These contexts help explain how a film attentive to ordinary routines can carry social tension without turning into a conventional issue-driven drama. Criterion Channel’s listing and Film at Lincoln Center’s conversation with Kapadia and producer Thomas Hakim provide those framings.
Why does the film feel quiet—and why did it connect?
Its quietness lies in what it observes: working women moving through a changing city, sustaining relationships and navigating constraints that rarely resolve neatly. The film asks viewers to spend time with those rhythms rather than treating plot mechanics as the main attraction. The Associated Press review describes the experience as one that “washes over you” and argues that the plot is not the point. AP gave the film four stars out of four; that is the outlet’s rating, not a measure of critical consensus. Read the AP review.

Kapadia has described her approach as allowing fiction and documentary to coexist. In a 2024 BFI announcement, she said: “Although All We Imagine as Light is my first fiction feature, it’s still very important to me that fiction and documentary can exist together. What I try to do is approach fiction in a non-fiction way.” That approach helps account for the film’s attention to lived environments and unforced moments. BFI’s announcement includes the full statement.
How Mumbai and the coast shape the film
The move from Mumbai to a coastal town changes the story’s space as well as its pace. Kapadia’s international press-kit interview identifies the coastal section as taking place in Ratnagiri and connects the region to migration into Mumbai’s mills. She describes the city locations in relation to women leaving home for work, constant urban change, redevelopment, housing documentation and the history of the Lower Parel–Dadar cotton-mill district. These are the director’s contextual account, rather than independently verified urban-history statistics. The international press kit contains her discussion.

The production’s changing conditions are also part of that account. Kapadia says the Mumbai section was filmed during the monsoon in June and July 2023, followed by a break before the second section was shot in November. She also describes using a small Canon EOS C70 as a second camera in some places where the crew lacked permission to film. These are reported production details from the filmmaker’s interview, not a general filming recommendation.
What did the Cannes Grand Prix mean?
All We Imagine as Light won the 2024 Cannes Grand Prix. That recognition brought international attention to an independent fiction feature, but it does not make “masterpiece” an objective designation. The case for the film rests in its performances, its close observation of place and work, and the way personal longing develops alongside material pressures.

Those historical distinctions are BFI’s account. The Cannes award and that festival context help explain the film’s significance without implying that its success happened overnight. BFI’s 2024 announcement reports both the award and the selection context.
