All the Empty Rooms is a short documentary about the bedrooms families have kept for children killed in school shootings. Journalist Steve Hartman and photographer Lou Bopp visit those rooms to make a record of the children’s lives and of the memories their families choose to preserve. The film won the 2026 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.
What is All the Empty Rooms about?
The 2025 Netflix documentary follows CBS News correspondent Steve Hartman and photographer Lou Bopp as they document bedrooms left behind by children killed in school shootings. The rooms are not presented as explanations of gun violence or as a substitute for the children’s stories. They are intimate spaces shaped by family decisions about what to keep, and the film’s focus is the children remembered through them.
Netflix describes the film as a memorial project. In its account, director Joshua Seftel said, “In many ways, this film is about silence.” That quiet framing draws attention to what remains in a room and to the families who live with its meaning, rather than claiming to explain school shootings as a whole. How did Hartman and Bopp begin the project?
Hartman’s outreach to bereaved families developed over several years. Netflix Tudum says he wrote to families who had lost a child to a school shooting since Columbine, and that the bedroom project had begun seven years before Tudum’s December 2025 account. CBS News’s 2026 Oscar report describes a related origin: Hartman grew numb while covering school shootings and began writing letters in 2018 to families who had lost a child since Sandy Hook, asking to document the child’s room with Bopp. Those are accounts of the project’s development, not a claim that every family or room appears in the finished short.

TIME reported in 2025 that eight families affected by five school shootings invited Hartman and Bopp into their homes over about seven years, and that the pair took more than 10,000 photographs. Those figures describe the wider project as TIME reported it; they should not be read as a count of the film’s complete contents. TIME
Whose rooms are featured?
TIME’s 2025 report describes the rooms of Dominic Blackwell and Hallie Scruggs and includes parents’ reflections on preserving familiar smells and belongings. CBS News’s Oscar coverage names four children whose rooms appear in the film: Hallie, Gracie, Dominic, and Jackie. The documentary’s premise gives these private spaces significance through the families’ own choices; the children are more than the circumstances of their deaths.

Because the rooms belong to grieving families, details about belongings and preservation are most meaningful as part of those families’ accounts, not as spectacle. The project’s intimate approach offers a way to encounter personal memory, but it does not stand in for the many different experiences of bereavement.
