Megan Thee Stallion revisited the 2001 snake performance
While introducing Paris Hilton, host Megan Thee Stallion appeared in a Britney-inspired look with a python, recalling Spears’s 2001 performance of “I’m a Slave 4 U.” Elle’s account quotes Megan saying, “I’m just playing, come get this thing!”
The Washington Post described the outfit as inspired by Spears’s “I’m a Slave 4 U” look and reported that the snake was live. It quotes Megan reacting, “Come get this snake! I don’t know this snake. This snake don’t know me.”

Sabrina Carpenter sampled “Oops!…I Did It Again”
Carpenter’s medley included “Please Please Please,” “Taste” and “Espresso,” the three songs listed in MTV’s official 2024 VMAs performance playlist. Elle reports that the “Espresso” segment also used the spoken line, “But I thought the old lady dropped it into the ocean in the end,” from Spears’s “Oops!…I Did It Again.” It was a sample from the recording, not a live appearance or statement by Spears.
Elle also read Carpenter’s kiss with an extraterrestrial backup dancer as a callback to the famous Spears–Madonna kiss. That is the outlet’s interpretation; MTV’s playlist confirms the medley’s songs but does not describe the staging.

Artists mentioned Spears and her past performances
Elle reports that Addison Rae named Spears’s 2000 performances of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Oops!…I Did It Again” when asked about memorable past VMAs performances. The same account says Halsey mentioned Spears’s kiss with Madonna.
Tate McRae echoed a Spears look
Elle described Tate McRae’s sheer lace Roberto Cavalli dress as a recreation of Spears’s 2001 VMAs look, while noting that Spears’s original dress was by Dolce & Gabbana. TIME also included McRae among the artists paying tribute to Spears’s past outfits.

Archival clips brought back the 2001 performance
The broadcast included archival footage of Spears with a python around her shoulders in 2001, according to the Washington Post and TIME. Elle separately reports that videos of Spears’s earlier VMA performances appeared in the pre-show. Those accounts document examples, not a complete inventory of every archival clip shown.
Spears’s 2003 performance was nominated as iconic
Spears’s 2003 performance with Madonna, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott—“Like a Virgin / Hollywood”—appeared among the nominees in MTV’s Most Iconic Performance category. MTV’s winners page lists Katy Perry’s “Roar” as the winner, so the Spears performance was nominated but did not win.

Elle suggested that LISA’s head microphone might be a small reference to Spears. Treat that connection as speculative rather than an established tribute. MTV’s performance playlist confirms LISA performed “New Woman” and “Rockstar,” but does not identify the microphone as a Spears reference.
