Superman’s biggest screen cameos range from Henry Cavill’s post-credits return in Black Adam to Nicolas Cage’s long-awaited appearance in The Flash and Milly Alcock’s surprise turn as Kara at the end of 2025’s Superman. They don’t all mean the same thing: some feature a returning actor, some use a stand-in or voice performer, and others are brief continuity nods or Easter eggs.
This is a selected guide to notable film and television appearances, not a complete inventory of every Superman reference. The versions played by George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, Henry Cavill and David Corenswet belong to distinct screen continuities; treating them as one continuous story obscures what each appearance is doing. DC’s live-action watch guide likewise separates major-role films from cameo appearances.
What counts as a Superman cameo?
Fans use “cameo” broadly. Here, it means a brief or surprise appearance, while the labels below distinguish what viewers are actually seeing:
- Returning actor or character: an actor reprises a screen role, often signaling a continuity connection.
- Stand-in portrayal: the character appears, but the credited star is not the performer in that scene.
- Voice performance: an actor plays Superman or another character without appearing on screen as them.
- Multiverse or archival image: a past version appears in a montage or crossover rather than entering the main story as a new character.
- Easter egg: a visual, name or line rewards recognition but is not necessarily a story cameo.
Some appearances fit more than one category. For example, The Flash uses a multiverse montage to bring earlier screen Supermen into view, while the 2025 Superman mixes a plot-relevant guest with voice roles and background comic references. DC’s roundup of the 2025 film’s Easter eggs and cameos identifies both kinds of material.

Where does Henry Cavill’s Superman cameo?
Black Adam (2022): the post-credits return
Cavill appears as Superman in a post-credits scene in Black Adam, where the character confronts Black Adam. It was framed as the start of a possible showdown, but that follow-up has not materialized. The scene is a direct appearance by Cavill, not a visual reference or voice-only role. DC’s continuity guide places it within the DCEU sequence.
Shazam! (2019) and Peacemaker (2022): Superman without Cavill on camera
Superman also appears briefly in Shazam! and Peacemaker, but DC says both scenes use a stunt double. They show the character in the DCEU; they should not be described as Cavill personally appearing in those shots. This distinction matters most in Shazam!, where Superman is shown only in a quick closing moment.
Which legacy Supermen appear in The Flash?
The 2023 film’s multiverse sequence includes screen versions associated with George Reeves and Christopher Reeve. These are brief montage appearances, not new scenes that continue either actor’s original Superman storyline. DC’s guide to Superman film continuities treats those versions as distinct from later portrayals.

- Superman: The Movie (4K)
Brandon Routh’s Superman has a different kind of return. Routh first played the character in Superman Returns (2006), then reprised the role in the 2019–2020 television crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths. That crossover identifies his version as Earth-96. It is a television multiverse revisit, rather than a cameo in The Flash.

Yes. Cage appears as a long-haired Superman fighting a giant spider in The Flash (2023). The scene is a brief multiverse appearance—and the payoff to a Superman film that was planned but never made.
Tim Burton was attached to direct Superman Lives, with Cage cast in the title role. The studio cancelled the project in 1998 amid budget concerns. Cage later voiced Superman in the animated film Teen Titans Go! To the Movies (2018), before appearing on screen as the character in The Flash. DC recounts the unrealized film’s history and the eventual cameo in its feature on Cage’s Superman appearances.

Stories about the unmade film’s unusual script requirements—including polar bears and a space-dog—should be treated as production lore, not settled fact: DC notes that some claims have been disputed by the film’s producer. The giant spider, by contrast, is visible in the released Flash scene.
Who are the surprise guests in the 2025 Superman film?
Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El
Milly Alcock appears as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, at the end of the film. It is the clearest surprise character cameo in the movie. DC connects Kara’s red-sun partying to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the comic it identifies as the basis for the next Supergirl film. That makes the comic a useful next read for viewers curious about Kara’s introduction and the character’s upcoming screen story. DC’s film guide discusses the connection.

Will Reeve as a news anchor
Will Reeve, a television reporter in real life, appears as a news anchor in the film. The role is a real-person guest appearance, with the character presented as a DC Universe counterpart of Reeve himself.

Alan Tudyk and the Fortress robots
Alan Tudyk voices robot #4, also called Gary. Other voices among the Fortress robots include Michael Rooker, Grace Chen, Jennifer Holland and Pom Klementieff. These are easy to miss as voice performances, rather than on-screen guest appearances. DC names the performers and roles in its Easter-egg and cameo roundup.
Brief comic-character appearances
The film also includes smaller appearances by familiar names from Superman’s wider world, including Cat Grant, Steve Lombard, Amanda McCoy, Cheryl Kimble, Larry Chin, Dean and Desmond Farr, Eve Teschmacher and Otis Berg. These are better understood as brief character appearances than as a string of major guest-star turns.
References that are not guest appearances
PlanetWatch, LordTech, Stagg International, Jitters and a 52 network reference help fill out the film’s world. They are continuity signals, fictional brands or background nods—not cameo roles by themselves. DC’s Easter-egg guide identifies these details among the film’s references.

How to tell a cameo from a continuity clue
A useful way to read these appearances is to ask what the scene contributes. A returning actor may connect separate stories; a stunt double can put Superman in the scene without the star; a voice role rewards attentive viewers; and an Easter egg may deepen the setting without changing the plot. The distinction is especially useful in multiverse stories, where a quick image of an earlier Superman does not necessarily mean his original continuity has resumed.
DC’s 2025 guide notes that its list may not capture every reference, and its live-action watch order focuses on films where Superman has a major role rather than every cameo. This roundup therefore concentrates on selected, source-confirmed film and television appearances, not every animated role, episode, background detail or future project.
