Christina Ricci ranks first for the defining mix of deadpan wit and macabre poise she brought to Wednesday in the 1990s films. Lisa Loring comes next: the first screen Wednesday established a template that later performers could reinterpret. Jenna Ortega gives the character a vivid contemporary lead performance, while Nicole Fugere’s work in a television film and series is an important, less widely seen part of Wednesday’s screen history.
This ranking covers live-action screen performances, judged by interpretation, distinctiveness, influence, and the opportunities each adaptation gave Wednesday. It is an editorial comparison, not an audience poll or an objective measure. Animated and stage portrayals are listed separately below because their performances use different tools.
Live-action actresses who played Wednesday Addams, ranked
1. Christina Ricci
Ricci played Wednesday in The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993). Her controlled, unsmiling delivery makes the character’s morbid observations feel both startling and completely matter-of-fact. The films give her room to turn Wednesday’s intelligence and macabre humor into a distinct comic presence, especially in the sequel.
Paramount’s catalog entry for The Addams Family confirms the 1991 film. A critic’s published ranking also singles out Ricci’s memorable work in Addams Family Values; that is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus ranking.

2. Lisa Loring
Loring played Wednesday in the original The Addams Family television series (1964–1966) and returned for the 1977 television film Halloween with the New Addams Family. As the earliest screen Wednesday in this ranking, she helped establish the character’s recognizable contrast between a composed manner and unsettling interests. Her historical influence is central to the role’s screen history, even though later adaptations offered different kinds of material and visibility.
3. Jenna Ortega
Ortega leads Netflix’s Wednesday, which premiered in 2022. The series places Wednesday at the center of a continuing story, giving the character more space to investigate, make decisions, and carry a plot than a supporting role in a family comedy typically allows. Ortega’s performance makes the familiar deadpan legible to a contemporary audience while emphasizing Wednesday’s independence and intensity.

In an official Netflix interview, Ortega said, “Wednesday is naturally so different from who I would play in a horror film.” The distinction is useful: Wednesday may be macabre, but the performance is built around a specific character rather than simply a horror archetype. Netflix’s season-two cast guide discusses her return to the title role.
4. Nicole Fugere
Fugere played Wednesday in the 1998 television film Addams Family Reunion and in The New Addams Family (1998–1999). Those credits make her an essential part of the live-action record, even if the productions are less prominent in popular discussion than the original series, Ricci’s films, or Netflix’s series. Her placement reflects the comparative visibility and available material of the portrayals, not a claim that her work can be judged from a single definitive scene.

Why this order is subjective
There is no verified statistic here that measures audience preference, cultural influence, or acting quality. The rank reflects four considerations, which do not carry equal weight for every viewer:
- Interpretation: how each actress conveys Wednesday’s deadpan, intelligence, dark humor, and independence.
- Role and material: each adaptation differs in Wednesday’s age, screen time, and opportunities to affect the story.
- Influence and reach: being the first screen performer or leading a widely visible modern series matters to the character’s history, but is not the same as acting quality.
- Medium: a live-action performance is not directly comparable to voice acting or a stage portrayal.
Different priorities produce different rankings. A viewer who values historical priority may put Loring first; one who values a modern, story-leading portrayal may prefer Ortega. Published criticism has also favored Ricci’s Addams Family Values performance while recognizing the influence of Loring and Ortega’s contemporary energy.

Animated and stage Wednesday performers
These performers belong in an account of who has played Wednesday, but they are not included in the live-action ranking. Animation and theater call for different performance choices, so placing them on the same scale would obscure what each medium asks of an actor.
Animated voice performers
- Cindy Henderson: Wednesday in animated appearances beginning in 1972.
- Debi Derryberry: Wednesday in the 1992–1993 animated series.
- Chloë Grace Moretz: Wednesday in the animated films The Addams Family (2019) and The Addams Family 2 (2021).
Stage performers
- Krysta Rodriguez and Rachel Potter are among the performers who have played Wednesday on stage.
How Christina Ricci later returned to the franchise
Ricci’s role in the 1990s films is separate from her later participation in Netflix’s Wednesday. The series’ showrunner Alfred Gough described her contribution this way in Netflix’s season-two cast guide: “Christina is just an amazing person and actor, and she brings such value to the show, and the character’s so wonderful.” That appreciation speaks to her later involvement; it does not, by itself, settle which actress gave the best Wednesday performance.
