Spoilers for all three seasons of Squid Game. The Korean Netflix drama uses familiar playground games, children’s activities and simple contests as increasingly severe tests of strategy, nerve and cooperation. There are 12 formal competition rounds across the three seasons, plus five recruitment or pre-game challenges that are explicitly played on screen.

This list follows the story’s chronological order. It covers the scripted series only—not Squid Game: The Challenge. Season 3, released in 2025, is the planned series finale, so there is no fourth season to add to the sequence.

Every Squid Game game in order

13 Season 2 Mingle Formal round
14 Season 3 Hide and Seek Formal round

Ddakji and the other Season 2 recruitment contests are included because they are games played as part of the story. They are not numbered rounds in the main arena competition.

Season 1 games

1. Ddakji

Gi-hun encounters Ddakji during his recruitment meeting with the Recruiter in Episode 1. Each player folds a square of paper into a thick tile. One player places a tile on the ground; the other throws their tile at it, trying to flip it over.

  • Through all six games, players play cards, gather tokens and defy the odds to beat each game before progressing to the next. Make your best to have as many team member as possible until the last game to optimize your chance to win.

The Recruiter offers Gi-hun ₩100,000 for every winning round. When Gi-hun loses and cannot pay, the payment becomes a slap. Ddakji returns in Season 2 as one of the events in the Six-Legged Pentathlon.

2. Red Light, Green Light

This is the first official arena round. Players must move toward the finish line while Young-hee says “Green light” and stop completely when she says “Red light.” Her head turns back toward the players, and movement detected after the stop command results in elimination. The contestants have five minutes to reach safety.

Season 1 begins with 456 players. The first massacre eliminates 255, leaving 201 survivors. The game returns in Season 2 with essentially the same rules. Gi-hun knows what is about to happen and tries to warn the others; 91 players are eliminated in that version.

3. Dalgona or Honeycomb

Each contestant chooses one of four stamped shapes: a circle, triangle, star or umbrella. They receive a thin dalgona—a honeycomb-sugar cookie—and must use a needle to remove the chosen shape without cracking the surrounding candy.

The time limit is 10 minutes. Although 201 players survive Red Light, Green Light, only 187 return after the contestants vote to leave the competition. Seventy-nine are eliminated during Dalgona, leaving 108.

The objective is not to eat the candy or break the shape free by force. The stamped figure must be extracted intact.

4. Tug-of-War

Players are divided into teams of 10. Two teams stand on opposing elevated platforms and pull a rope toward their side. Once the losing team is defeated, the rope is cut and its members fall from the platform.

Strength matters, but the show also makes the strategic element clear: team selection, body position, coordinated timing and the ability to maintain pressure can change the result. The round reduces the field to 40 players.

5. Marbles

Contestants first choose a partner, assuming they will compete alongside someone they trust. Instead, each pair is told to play against one another. Every player starts with 10 marbles, and the winner must take all 10 of the opponent’s marbles within 30 minutes.

There is no single mandatory marble game. The pairs negotiate or invent their own formats, which may involve guessing, wagering or other familiar marble rules. That is why it is inaccurate to describe the round simply as an odd-or-even game.

Seventeen players remain afterward. Mi-nyeo survives because she did not find a partner and was not assigned to a match under the stated arrangement.

6. Glass Bridge or Glass Stepping Stones

Players cross two parallel rows of glass panels. At every position, one panel is tempered glass and can support two people; the other is ordinary glass and breaks under a player’s weight. Contestants must choose the safe panel repeatedly while moving toward the far side.

The bridge has 18 parallel stepping positions and the players have 16 minutes. The order of play becomes crucial: those at the front must take the greatest risk, while later players can learn from earlier choices.

Gi-hun, Sae-byeok and Sang-woo reach the end and become the finalists. They are not entirely safe, however. The bridge is detonated after the crossing, and flying glass injures Sae-byeok before the final game.

7. Squid Game

The final Season 1 contest is based on a traditional Korean playground game played on a court shaped like a squid. The rules divide players into offense and defense. Defenders can run on two feet inside the court, while attackers must hop on one foot outside the lines until they pass the squid’s “neck.” In the final phase, an attacker tries to reach and tap the top of the squid-shaped court.

A player forced outside the court is considered dead, while reaching the top wins the game. In the series’ two-player final, a coin toss determines offense and defense. The rules also allow victory when an opponent dies during play. Sang-woo ultimately kills himself, leaving Gi-hun as the winner.

Season 2 games

Season 2 adds three recruitment games before the contestants enter the formal competition. Its arena rounds are Red Light, Green Light, Six-Legged Pentathlon and Mingle. The season ends after Mingle and the failed rebellion; it does not show a separate final game.

8. Bread or Lottery

The Recruiter offers unhoused people a choice between a bun and a scratch-off lottery ticket. Someone choosing bread may eat it. Someone choosing the ticket receives a coin, scratches the ticket and returns the coin. No one may take both.

After the choices, the Recruiter destroys the leftover bread. The contest is a recruitment-side game rather than an official arena round, and its cruel choice frames the series’ argument about hunger, hope and the odds people are willing to accept.

9. Rock, Paper, Scissors, Minus One

Both players form rock, paper or scissors with both hands. They then remove one hand, leaving a single gesture to compare under ordinary Rock, Paper, Scissors rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Minus One” refers to removing one of the two hands—not subtracting a point from a score. In the Recruiter’s version, the loser must then play a round of Russian Roulette.

10. Russian Roulette

The Recruiter demonstrates two versions of the revolver game. In the reset version, the cylinder is reset before every pull, giving a player a five-in-six chance of surviving each individual attempt. In the continuous-cylinder version, the cylinder is spun once and players take turns without resetting it. If the first chambers are empty, the chance of the loaded chamber being reached increases until the gun must fire by the sixth pull.

Gi-hun and the Recruiter play the continuous version. Their game ends only when one of them is shot.

11. Red Light, Green Light

Season 2 repeats the first season’s opening test: move on “Green light,” freeze on “Red light,” and face elimination if Young-hee detects movement after the stop command. The major difference is Gi-hun’s knowledge. He attempts to organize and guide the terrified contestants through the round.

12. Six-Legged Pentathlon

Five-person teams are physically linked together in a six-legged relay. Each team has five minutes to complete five mini-games in sequence. The next event cannot begin until the current player finishes.

  1. Ddakji: Throw a folded paper tile to flip the opposing tile.
  2. Flying Stone: Throw one stone to knock over another. If the throw misses, the entire team retrieves the stone and returns to try again.
  3. Gong-gi: Toss and catch five small pieces through increasingly difficult stages, ending with a catch on the back of the hand.
  4. Spinning Top: Wrap a cord around a top and throw it so that it spins. A failed attempt requires the team to retrieve the top and start again.
  5. Jegi: Kick a shuttlecock-like jegi five consecutive times using the feet or ankles.

The team structure means that an individual’s weakness affects everyone’s time. The round eliminates 111 players, leaving 255.

13. Mingle

Players stand on a spinning carousel. When it stops, a number is announced. They must form groups containing exactly that number of living players and enter a room together.

A group of three cannot enter when the announced number is four, and a group with the wrong number is eliminated. Anyone left outside or unable to find a room is also eliminated. Dead contestants do not count toward the required total. Mingle leaves 100 players.

Season 3 games

14. Hide and Seek

Players draw a large gumball to determine their role. Blue means Hider; red means Seeker. Before the game begins, contestants may exchange teams if both players agree.

  • Hiders hide in the maze or search for an exit door. They receive keys.
  • Seekers search for Hiders and must find and kill at least one. They receive decorative knives.
  • Time limit: 30 minutes.

A Hider does not win simply by remaining concealed: escaping through an exit is also an option. A Seeker who fails to eliminate a Hider is killed. The round eliminates 35 players and leaves 25.

15. Jump Rope

Contestants must cross a narrow platform with a gap in its middle while a giant metal rope rotates overhead. Young-hee and Chul-su operate the rope from opposite sides. Players have to advance along the only route while jumping over the rope at the correct rhythm.

The time limit is 20 minutes. Anyone struck by the rope or thrown from the platform is eliminated. The round also creates an unusual contestant-counting case: after Jun-hee dies, her newborn child is formally added as Player 222.

ReeRaa Gonggi Korean Game, Tossing Set (Korean Traditional Play Game) Jebi chagi Stone catching Biseokchigi Paeng-y DDAKJI & Family & Party, Easter Basket Stuffers, Christmas (1 Set)
  • Gonggi Stone catching game (Korean Knucklebones) :Start the game by throwing five gong-gis onto the floor. Pick one gong-gi and throw it into the air. While this gong-gi is in the air, grab one that’s on the floor before catching the one in the air. Repeat this to clear the floor.
  • Jebi Kicks (Korean Hacky Sack) : Continuously kick ‘Jebi’ in the air without dropping. Whoever manages the most number of kicks wins.
  • Paeng-y (Spinning Tops) : Prepare by winding a rope around the bottom of the top. Then in one swift movement, yank on the free end of the rope to make the top spin.
  • Biseokchigi : Knock down the opponents’ Biseok(rocks) in 18 steps. Each step consists of stably resting the biseok on a body part and moving to opponent’s biseok to knock them down.
  • DDAKJI : It's involves two playing tiles of different colors. The point of the game is to flip over the other player's tile, by hitting it with your tile from above. As easy as the rules are, it's actually quite a challenging game that takes a lot more skill than you would think - but no worries, I'll give you a tip later to maximize our chances of winning this pastime.

16. Sky Squid Game

The finale takes place on three elevated towers shaped like a square, triangle and circle. Players begin on the square tower. To advance, they must push at least one contestant from the current tower.

On the second and third towers, a player must press a floor button to start the round. A countdown then begins. If no contestant is eliminated before the time expires, everyone in that round is eliminated. A death before the official start does not satisfy the rule.

That distinction determines the ending. Myung-gi falls on the third tower before anyone presses the button, so his death does not count as the required elimination. Gi-hun then sacrifices himself. Jun-hee’s baby, Player 222, is recognized as the winner and receives the ₩4.56 billion prize.

Common points of confusion

Claim What the series establishes
Ddakji is the first official round. It is a recruitment game. Red Light, Green Light is the first numbered arena round.
Season 1 has seven formal rounds. It has six formal rounds. Squid Game is the sixth; Ddakji is separate.
Marbles uses one fixed set of rules. Each pair chooses or negotiates its own marble game.
Dead players can complete a Mingle group. Only living players who enter the room count.
Season 2 has another game after Mingle. The season ends during the rebellion and continues into Season 3.
Any fall in Sky Squid Game counts. On the later towers, the button must be pressed before a valid round begins.
The newborn is only a symbolic contestant. Player 222 is formally added and ultimately wins.
