Beast is the strongest of Gohan’s forms by the story evidence shown so far. It is the transformation that lets him challenge Cell Max, but Dragon Ball does not publish a common power scale comparing every form. The ranking below is therefore an editorial judgment based on Gohan’s strongest demonstrated showing in each state, the story context, and how directly the material supports a comparison.
How this ranking works
This list ranks Gohan’s peak demonstrated forms in the main Dragon Ball story, not game abilities or official power levels. The order is clearest where the story directly compares forms, such as Super Saiyan 2 surpassing Super Saiyan. Comparisons across distant story eras—especially Ultimate, Super Saiyan 2, and Great Ape—are less definitive, so those placements are reasoned rather than measured.
Great Saiyaman is not included: it is Gohan’s superhero identity, not a transformation. Licensed games may list characters or forms separately, but their roster labels and mechanics do not establish story-canon power rankings.
Gohan’s forms ranked from strongest to weakest
1. Beast
Why it ranks first: Beast is Gohan’s strongest demonstrated form in the Super Hero story. It awakens after Piccolo is badly hurt fighting Cell Max. An official recap says Beast’s power makes Cell Max wary; Gohan later lands a full-power Special Beam Cannon while Piccolo restrains the giant. Goku also senses Gohan’s Ki from Beerus’s Planet, underscoring the scale of the moment. These are story feats, not a stated multiplier or a formal comparison against every other Gohan form. 2. Ultimate
In the Super Hero story, Gohan uses Ultimate before awakening Beast, including in his fight against Gamma 1. Placing Ultimate second reflects its late-era presentation and its position immediately before Beast—not an official statement that it defeats every earlier form in a direct contest. The official Super Hero arc recap establishes this sequence, but does not publish a numerical cross-form comparison.
3. Super Saiyan 2
Gohan unlocks Super Saiyan 2 when his rage erupts during the Cell Games. The official Android/Cell character feature explicitly describes it as a form that “transcends even Super Saiyan.” That makes its superiority to Gohan’s ordinary Super Saiyan form direct in the story materials. Its placement below Ultimate is an editorial judgment across different eras, not a measured result. The official character feature recounts the transformation.

4. Super Saiyan
Gohan attains Super Saiyan while training with Goku in the Room of Spirit and Time. They work toward making the form sustainable enough for everyday activity rather than treating it as a brief burst. It is below Super Saiyan 2, which the Cell Games account identifies as transcending it. The Android/Cell Arc profile describes his training and transformation.
5. Great Ape
As a child, Gohan’s tail regrows and he transforms after seeing Vegeta’s artificial moon, then rampages and overpowers Vegeta in that encounter. A Saiyan can become a Great Ape after taking in a full moon’s light or the equivalent of 17 million Blutz Waves from another source through the eyes. That figure describes the trigger; it is not a power multiplier for Gohan. Great Ape is last here as a transparent list choice, not because the sources directly compare child Gohan in this state with his later forms. Is Beast stronger than Ultimate Gohan?
The story presents Beast as a step beyond the Ultimate state Gohan uses earlier in the Super Hero arc: Beast emerges against Cell Max, and its power makes the enemy wary. That supports ranking Beast above Ultimate on demonstrated story presentation. It is not a universal numeric comparison, and the official materials cited here do not give a multiplier or a complete power chart.

- Directly supported: Super Saiyan 2 is described as transcending Super Saiyan; Gohan’s Great Ape transformation is tied to his tail and Vegeta’s artificial moon; and the Super Hero story places Ultimate before Beast.
- Editorial inference: Ultimate above Super Saiyan 2, and the position of child-era Great Ape relative to Gohan’s later forms. Those states appear in different contexts, with no common official measurement.
- Not established: A complete set of comparable power levels or multipliers for every Gohan form. Avoid treating fan charts, game mechanics, or character-select labels as official story measurements.
For example, Sparking! ZERO’s fighter roster uses game character labels, while the Dragon Ball Legends Ultimate Gohan page describes game abilities. They can show how games represent Gohan, but they do not settle the canon ranking.
