Here is a worst-to-best ranking of all seven released Scream feature films through Scream 7 (2026). It is an editorial ranking, not a critic-score average: the list weighs each film’s mystery and reveal, characters, suspense, freshness, and success as both a sequel and a standalone story. The two films titled Scream are identified by year.
All seven Scream movies, ranked worst to best
This ranking follows Tom’s Guide’s published order, presented here from worst to best. Its placements reflect that outlet’s judgments, not a universal consensus; other critics and viewers may weigh the films differently.
-
Scream 7 (2026)
Tom’s Guide puts the newest installment last, arguing that a creative pivot is visible and that the film can feel as if it is going through the motions. That is a response to the finished film, not an objective measure of its quality. Paramount reported a $97 million worldwide opening and more than $200 million in global box office, calling it the franchise’s highest-grossing installment at that time; those studio-reported commercial results do not determine its artistic rank. Scream VI (2023)
The New York setting gives the series a different backdrop, and Tom’s Guide sees value in its attempt to address legacy franchises. The outlet nevertheless places it sixth, finding the film too reliant on nostalgia. Its appeal may depend on how much a viewer enjoys the series looking back at its own history.

Scream 3 (2000)
Tom’s Guide ranks the Hollywood-set third film fifth. Its themes have gained relevance, in the outlet’s view, even if the execution is messier and campier than the earlier entries. That unevenness is part of what separates it from the stronger films in this ordering.
-
Scream 4 (2011)
At fourth, Scream 4 earns credit for its attention to social-media fame, brisk pace, and blend of returning and new characters. Tom’s Guide also highlights its Ghostface reveal. It is a sequel that gives its contemporary setting a clear role in the story rather than treating it as mere decoration.
-
Scream (2022)
The fifth film, titled simply Scream, places third in Tom’s Guide’s ranking. The outlet praises the new ensemble and performances, along with the film’s balance between honoring the 1996 original and establishing a new generation. Use the year whenever naming it to distinguish it from the first film.
-
Scream 2 (1997)
Tom’s Guide ranks the sequel second, praising its self-aware treatment of sequel conventions, college setting, tension, humor, and shocks. This placement illustrates how an editorial ranking can differ from a critic-score list: Rotten Tomatoes’ franchise guide places Scream 2 above the original, with an 83% Tomatometer in its February 26, 2026 publication context. Scores can change, and they are not the same thing as an individual film ranking. Rotten Tomatoes’ Scream franchise guide

Scream (1996)
The original takes the top spot in Tom’s Guide’s list for its memorable opening, dialogue, and genre-aware slasher construction. Rotten Tomatoes listed it at 78% in the same guide and publication context, below Scream 2—another example of why an aggregate score and a critic’s ordered list need not produce the same winner.
What this ranking weighs
To compare the films consistently, this list considers five questions rather than treating box office or review aggregates as direct measures of quality:
Rank #4
- Mystery and reveal: Does the central whodunit hold attention, and does its resolution feel satisfying?
- Characters and chemistry: Do the cast and relationships give the suspense something meaningful to put at risk?
- Suspense and kills: Does the film create tension effectively, and do its set pieces serve the story?
- Freshness: Does its horror commentary or franchise perspective add something new?
- Standalone and sequel value: Can it work as a story in its own right while also building on what came before?
The order is an editorial judgment using those axes, not a scorecard reported by a study. A different weighting—such as favoring the original’s influence or a particular sequel’s scares—could produce a different ranking.
