Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMy ranking of the seven-film core Alien saga puts the original first, with Aliens close behind: one is the series’ most controlled nightmare, the other its most satisfying action film. The order is subjective, not a universal verdict. I weigh suspense and atmosphere, pacing, characters, creature and production design, and what each film adds to the franchise. A horror-first viewer may rank them differently from someone who values action, mythology, or experimentation.
“All” here means the seven core-saga films, from Alien (1979) through Alien: Romulus (2024). The two Alien vs. Predator films are crossovers, not part of this ranking; the broader franchise grouping on 20th Century Studios Japan’s series listing includes them.
My ranking of the seven core Alien movies
1. Alien (1979)
Ridley Scott’s original remains the series’ strongest blend of suspense, design, and restraint. The Nostromo feels like a working ship rather than a sleek adventure set, and the crew’s ordinary routines make the danger feel invasive. The creature is frightening partly because the film reveals it sparingly. Its slow, tightening pace is not a warm-up for a later action scene; the claustrophobic dread is the point.
It tops my list because the setting, performances, and creature effects all serve the same unnerving idea: there is nowhere safe to hide. Viewers who want frequent action may prefer the sequel, but no other entry sustains this particular kind of tension as completely.

2. Aliens (1986)
James Cameron transforms the premise into a propulsive action film without losing the sense that the alien threat is overwhelming. The larger cast gives the story more room for group dynamics, and its set pieces have a directness and momentum that make it the easiest installment to revisit for thrills. Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley anchors the shift from survival horror to a story about protection and responsibility.
It ranks just below Alien because the expanded scale and combat change the flavor of the fear. If you value pace, character bonds, and memorable action over slow-burn suspense, this could easily be your number one.
3. Alien: Romulus (2024)
Romulus returns to a confined setting and a younger group facing a deadly life form. 20th Century Studios describes its characters as young space colonizers scavenging a derelict space station when they encounter the threat; the official page lists Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu in the cast. Its place here reflects how effectively the film reconnects with the series’ roots while giving the central ordeal to a new crew.

It does not displace the first two films for me, but it is a strong choice if you want a recent entry with a contained, survival-focused setup. The studio’s framing of it as a return to the franchise’s roots is on its official film page.

4. Prometheus (2012)
Prometheus takes the saga in a more speculative direction, turning attention toward humanity’s origins and the consequences of seeking answers. That shift gives it a distinct visual identity and a larger set of ideas than a straightforward creature-stalks-a-crew story. It also makes the film less consistent as suspense: its mysteries and philosophical ambitions sometimes pull focus from the characters’ immediate peril.
I rank it fourth because its willingness to expand the mythology is more interesting than its dramatic execution is steady. Viewers drawn to the franchise’s questions about creation and responsibility may put it higher.
Rank #3

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
5. Alien: Covenant (2017)
Alien: Covenant continues the prequel strand while bringing the series back toward a more overt creature-horror mode. Its tension comes from the collision between a vulnerable crew, an unfamiliar environment, and the consequences of what they encounter. The result has striking moments, but its competing interests—mythology, character drama, and direct scares—do not always feel as unified as those in the films above it.
The official franchise page dates its release to May 19, 2017; see 20th Century Studios’ film listing. I place it below Prometheus because its return to familiar horror beats is less compelling to me than that film’s riskier expansion of the series.

David Fincher’s feature debut is bleak, austere, and deliberately inhospitable. The prison setting gives the film a severe look, and its refusal to offer an easy continuation of Aliens makes it one of the franchise’s boldest tonal turns. But that same bleakness narrows the pleasure of the experience, and the story’s grim direction can leave less room for the suspenseful, character-rich escalation that defines the top entries.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
It is a more rewarding pick for viewers who appreciate a stark, downbeat interpretation than for those seeking the series’ most rewatchable thrills. Its ambition keeps it above the last-place entry, even though I find the result less satisfying than the films ahead of it.
7. Alien: Resurrection (1997)
Resurrection is the saga’s strangest tonal experiment, with a more heightened, offbeat sensibility than the first three films. That difference gives it a personality of its own, but the humor and heightened style make the threat feel less oppressive. I admire the willingness to take the series somewhere unexpected more than I enjoy the balance it finds between horror and eccentricity.
It comes last in my ranking, not because it lacks ideas, but because its approach makes the alien feel least frightening to me. If you favor oddball reinvention over atmosphere, this may be the entry you would move upward.

Why rankings of the Alien films differ
These films are not trying to deliver the same experience. The original is a slow-burn horror film; Aliens prioritizes action; the prequels put more weight on mythology; and other sequels test different tones and settings. A ranking changes depending on which of those aims matters most to you.
- For suspense and atmosphere: start with Alien.
- For action and momentum: Aliens is the clearest choice.
- For mythology and big questions: compare Prometheus with Alien: Covenant.
- For a recent, contained survival story: try Alien: Romulus.
- For a more unusual or severe tone: consider Alien: Resurrection or Alien 3.
Other editorial rankings and fan discussions show different orders, but neither an individual list nor a discussion thread establishes a representative consensus. The most useful ranking is the one that makes clear what it values—and leaves room for disagreement.
What order should you watch the Alien movies in?
For a first viewing, follow release order. Disney+’s official viewing guide recommends that approach for newcomers and distinguishes it from in-universe chronology. It lets the franchise’s reveals and shifts in style arrive as audiences first encountered them.
- Alien (1979)
- Aliens (1986)
- Alien 3 (1992)
- Alien: Resurrection (1997)
- Prometheus (2012)
- Alien: Covenant (2017)
- Alien: Romulus (2024)
Story chronology is different: the prequels take place earlier, while Romulus fits between Alien and Aliens in the franchise’s timeline. Choose chronology for a rewatch if you want the events arranged within the fictional universe; choose release order to experience the series’ original progression.
