This ranking covers six screen works featuring Art the Clown: two shorts, one anthology feature and the three released Terrifier features. The 2011 Terrifier is a short film, not the 2016 feature. Because All Hallows’ Eve brings the earlier shorts into an anthology frame, this is a ranking of Art’s screen appearances—not just the core feature series. The order below is a critical judgment, not an official franchise sequence or a consensus ranking.

How this ranking works

The entries are judged on how strongly Art anchors each work, narrative cohesion and pacing, performance and screen presence, practical effects, atmosphere, and how entertaining the film is on its own terms. The shorts are considered within their format rather than treated as failed feature films; the feature entries are weighed for how they balance Art’s performance, spectacle and story.

Critics disagree on the order. The Filibuster Blog’s six-work ranking puts Terrifier 2 first and The 9th Circle last, while Slashfilm’s feature-only list also puts Terrifier 2 first but ranks All Hallows’ Eve last. Those are examples of differing critical preferences, not proof of a universal consensus.

All 6 Art the Clown and Terrifier movies ranked

6. The 9th Circle (2008) — short

Art’s earliest screen appearance in this set is a compact origin point rather than a fully developed feature-length showcase. Its place here reflects the limits of its scale and storytelling compared with the later works, not a failure to matter: the short introduces the unsettling screen presence that the franchise would build around.

5. Terrifier (2011) — short

This early short is a separate work from the 2016 feature with the same title. It gives Art another brief appearance and helps trace the character’s development before a full-length film centered on him existed. As a short, it has less room for narrative breadth, but its value is in seeing the character take shape in a tighter format.

4. All Hallows’ Eve (2013) — anthology feature

All Hallows’ Eve gathers the two earlier shorts into a new frame story involving a babysitter and a VHS tape. That anthology structure makes it an unusual entry: Art appears across a feature, but the film is not as consistently centered on him as the later Terrifier features. JustWatch describes it as non-canonical to the Terrifier series.

The distinction in its place in Art’s history matters: The 9th Circle is his first screen appearance in this list, while All Hallows’ Eve is his first feature appearance. Damien Leone later described the shorts and anthology as providing only about 20 minutes of Art screen time, explaining why he went on to make a full-length film focused on the character. Leone’s 2017 interview with Masters of Horror UK discusses that transition.

3. Terrifier (2016) — feature

The first feature-length Terrifier puts Art at the center, turning the character’s silent performance and physical menace into the film’s main attraction. Its stripped-back story and practical-effects-driven horror suit viewers who want a direct, grimy slasher built around Art rather than a larger mythology. Against the later films, it feels leaner and narrower, but that focus is also its defining strength.

Rank #3

2. Terrifier 3 (2024) — feature

The third feature moves Art into a Christmas setting and continues Sienna Shaw’s story. The holiday contrast gives the film an immediately distinctive atmosphere, while its place after Terrifier 2 lets it work with a larger ongoing story than the 2016 film. It lands just below the top spot because Terrifier 2 is the more compelling combination of expanded narrative and Art-centered spectacle in this ranking.

1. Terrifier 2 (2022) — feature

Terrifier 2 is the strongest all-around entry here: it expands the story around Sienna Shaw without losing Art’s unnerving performance as its central draw. The broader narrative gives the horror more shape than the first feature, and the film’s scale supports both sustained atmosphere and memorable practical effects. It is the best starting point for viewers who want the franchise at its most fully developed, though watching the feature series in release order gives Sienna’s story its intended progression.

Is Terrifier 4 included?

No. The latest status reported here is from February 26, 2026: GamesRadar+ quoted Damien Leone saying the script was close to completion and that he hoped to begin pre-production in spring. The outlet also reported that an October 2026 release rumor had been debunked. That update does not establish a release date or make Terrifier 4 a released entry in this ranking. GamesRadar+ reported Leone’s update and the rumor correction.
