Amy Madigan won the 2026 Oscar for best supporting actress for Weapons, but an editorial ranking can put the performances in a different order. Here is how the five nominees compare on dramatic impact, emotional effect, distinctiveness, and staying power.
Who were the 2026 supporting actress Oscar nominees?
The 98th Academy Awards honored films released in 2025. Its five supporting actress nominees were:
- Elle Fanning, Sentimental Value
- Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Sentimental Value
- Amy Madigan, Weapons — winner
- Wunmi Mosaku, Sinners
- Teyana Taylor, One Battle after Another
The Academy’s official ceremony page lists the nominees and winner; the Associated Press independently reported the same lineup in its nominee list.
How this ranking works
This is an editorial judgment, not an official order or a claim about critical consensus. I weigh each performance’s dramatic function, emotional effect, specificity and control, and how strongly it lingers. A performance can be excellent in a quieter register; screen time or volume alone does not determine placement.

The five nominees, ranked
1. Teyana Taylor, One Battle after Another
Taylor takes the top spot for the force of her early impact. In his March 2026 awards preview for The Atlantic, David Sims called her performance “electrifying.” That vivid impression makes her the most immediately arresting nominee in this ranking. Sims personally thought Taylor ought to win, even as he predicted Madigan would.
2. Wunmi Mosaku, Sinners
Mosaku’s performance offers a compelling contrast to Taylor’s more overt charge. Sims described it as “more quietly pitched” while emphasizing its emotional centrality to Sinners. That restraint is a strength: a performance need not dominate a scene to give a film much of its emotional weight.

3. Amy Madigan, Weapons
Madigan won the Oscar, and Sims’s preview singled out her frightening third-act punch as a reason she was a formidable contender. The performance’s impact, as described there, comes from its ability to turn the film’s closing stretch into a source of fear. This ranking places Taylor and Mosaku higher as performances, not as a challenge to the Academy’s result.
4. Elle Fanning, Sentimental Value
Fanning was one of two nominees from Sentimental Value. The available published commentary does not offer a specific assessment of her performance to weigh against the descriptions of Taylor, Mosaku, and Madigan. Her placement here is therefore less firmly grounded in comparative criticism; it should not be mistaken for a claim that the Academy or critics ranked her fourth.

5. Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Sentimental Value
Lilleaas shares the film’s two-nominee showing with Fanning. The cited awards-season commentary does not describe her performance in comparable detail, so there is no well-supported basis here for a confident distinction between the two Sentimental Value nominees. Her position reflects the limits of the comparison, not a definitive verdict on the work.

The Academy named Madigan the winner; it did not publish a vote total or margin that would show how close the result was. The Academy’s January 22, 2026 nominations announcement says members of each of its 19 branches voted on nominees in their respective categories, and that final-round voting used secret online ballots tabulated by PricewaterhouseCoopers. As the Academy states: “All rounds of Oscars voting are conducted by secret online ballot, tabulated by the independent accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.”

That process establishes the winner, not a universal critical hierarchy. Sims’s March preview captured the distinction: he predicted Madigan would win but said Taylor ought to. The difference between a forecast and a preference is exactly why an editorial ranking should explain its criteria rather than present an order as fact.
