Carrie (1976) is the strongest place to start—and the most defensible pick for the best of the four screen versions. Brian De Palma’s film has the clearest claim to benchmark status, while the 2013 remake offers the most compelling alternative in this ranking. The other two have different jobs: The Rage: Carrie 2 is a sequel, and Carrie (2002) is a television adaptation.
This ranking covers the four movie and television-movie releases: 1976, 1999, 2002 and 2013. It weighs direction, performances, tone, adaptation choices and pacing rather than treating “best” as an objective score.
1. Carrie (1976)
Brian De Palma’s adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 novel remains the benchmark. Its combination of intimate humiliation, mounting suspense and stylized horror gives Carrie’s final eruption a force the later versions have to contend with. Sissy Spacek’s central performance makes the character both frightening and painfully vulnerable; Piper Laurie’s portrayal of her mother gives the film an equally memorable source of menace.
There is also unusually clear institutional recognition behind its top ranking. The American Film Institute records Academy Award nominations for Spacek for Best Actress and Laurie for Actress in a Supporting Role, and placed the film 46th on its 2001 list of the 100 most thrilling American films. Those honors are context, not a rule that every viewer must put it first. AFI Catalog: Carrie

Best for: viewers who want the foundational film, De Palma’s suspense-driven style and the version with documented AFI and Academy recognition.
2. Carrie (2013)
The 2013 film revisits King’s novel rather than continuing the 1976 story. Its new cast and contemporary-era perspective make it a remake with its own emphasis, not a substitute for De Palma’s film. JustWatch’s August 2026 critic described its approach as humane and its tone as changed; that is a useful way to frame the remake’s intentions, though it remains a critical judgment rather than a settled verdict. It ranks second here because it makes a polished later companion to the original, while the 1976 film remains the more distinctive and influential screen version. Viewers looking for a modern retelling may prefer its sensibility; those who value the original’s visual style and suspense may not.
Best for: viewers curious about a later retelling and a different emotional emphasis.

3. The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999)
The Rage: Carrie 2 is a sequel to the 1976 film—not another direct adaptation of King’s novel. It follows a separate story, with Amy Irving returning as Sue Snell, linking it to the earlier movie. That connection makes it an interesting extension of the original, but it also means it is doing something different from the two remake/adaptation entries in this ranking. AFI Catalog: The Rage: Carrie 2
JustWatch characterizes it as a troubled but interesting continuation. Its ambition to carry the premise forward has appeal, though it does not have the same focused claim to be the definitive version of King’s story. JustWatch’s August 2026 Carrie ranking

This television movie is a separate adaptation of King’s novel, not a sequel to either the 1976 or 2013 film. Its TV-movie format gives it a different feel from the theatrical versions, and it is a reasonable choice for viewers interested in another interpretation of the same source story. JustWatch’s August 2026 guide places it fourth in its own ranking, while praising the cast and writing and criticizing its length and effects. Those are the outlet’s assessments, not universal measures of the film. JustWatch’s August 2026 Carrie ranking

It comes last here because its approach is less consistently effective at sustaining tension than the higher-ranked films. Its value is chiefly comparative: seeing how a television adaptation handles the material differently.
Best for: viewers who want to compare another adaptation, especially after watching the original.
How to choose which Carrie to watch
- For the essential screen version: start with Carrie (1976).
- For a later retelling: choose Carrie (2013).
- For a continuation of the original film: watch The Rage: Carrie 2 after the 1976 movie.
- For another adaptation in a television-movie format: try Carrie (2002).
The 1976, 2002 and 2013 films adapt the source story; the 1999 film is the sequel. The original novel was published in 1974. For a direct comparison of what each screen version changes, reading Stephen King’s original Carrie is a useful next step. Stephen King’s official Carrie page
