Avengers: Endgame is the best of the 37 Marvel Cinematic Universe theatrical movies in this ranking. It delivers the franchise’s strongest emotional payoff, while Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the best standalone film and Iron Man remains the most complete origin story.
The ranking runs from Iron Man (2008) through The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), including Thunderbolts* and all three Ant-Man films.
Ranking all 37 released Marvel Studios MCU theatrical films from best to worst: Avengers: Endgame takes first place because it turns more than a decade of character investment into an unusually effective emotional payoff. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the MCU’s best standalone thriller, while Iron Man, Black Panther, and Thor: Ragnarok remain the strongest examples of the franchise finding a distinctive identity.
This is an editorial ranking rather than a Rotten Tomatoes leaderboard. It weighs screenplay and direction, character and emotional payoff, originality, action and design, contribution to the wider MCU, and rewatchability. Critical and audience reception are useful cross-checks, but box-office reach is not treated as a quality score.
Scope: which 37 MCU movies are included?
The list runs from Iron Man (2008) through The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025). It includes the 37 Marvel Studios theatrical films released within that scope, including Thunderbolts*—the film later associated with the team name The New Avengers—and all three Ant-Man films.
#1 Best Overall
- SIZE: In order to better fix the position of the poster, the display size is designed to be slightly smaller than the 27x40 poster size. With a modern style, 27x40 poster frame is suitable for hanging on any wall in home, office, photo studio, art gallery, school exhibition hall.
- Upgraded Material: These light-weight picture frames use upgraded plastic material, Scratch-proof and durable. And a thicker plastic cover with a protective film (prevent scratches) keeps posters better preserved. Before use, please tear off the bothside film.
- EASY to INSTALL: The frame strips can be easily assembled by sliding together, which is especially for large size poster frames to achieve the lightness. The frame back comes with 2 pcs sturdy hangers that can be hung vertically or horizontally from the wall.
- PRECIOUS GIFT: The frame is suitable for any style of photo, such as art prints, children's artwork, Video Game, Movie posters. It is the perfect gift for your family or friends on anniversaries, weddings, birthdays, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas.
- SECURE PACKAGE: Each frame is individually plastic sealed with corner guard and finally overall sealed to ensure safe shipping and avoid damaged. Strong collisions may cause the frame corners to separate, just simply slide the strips to get a intact poster frame again.
It excludes MCU television projects, Sony films outside Marvel Studios’ MCU film slate, animated features, one-shots, and films released after The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Rotten Tomatoes’ ranking page has since expanded its listing to 38 films by including Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but that later addition is outside this specifically defined 37-film ranking. See the current Rotten Tomatoes MCU movie list for that changing catalog.
The 37 MCU movies ranked
1. Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Endgame is the MCU’s most successful emotional payoff. Its time-heist structure is busy, but the complications generally serve a clear purpose: revisiting the characters, places, and relationships that made the Infinity Saga matter. The final battle supplies the expected spectacle, yet the film’s lasting strength is its understanding that an ending has to resolve people, not merely defeat a villain. It is not the tightest screenplay in the series, but few blockbusters have converted eleven years of accumulated investment into such a coherent communal experience. Rotten Tomatoes similarly describes it as an emotionally impactful conclusion to the Infinity Saga.
2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
The MCU’s sharpest political thriller is also one of its most disciplined films. Paranoia, surveillance, compromised institutions, practical-feeling action, and Steve Rogers’ moral certainty give it an identity beyond superhero spectacle. The Steve-and-Bucky relationship supplies the personal stakes beneath the conspiracy, while Black Widow and Sam Wilson make the ensemble feel purposeful rather than ornamental. It is a model of how a shared-universe film can deepen its mythology without sacrificing the clarity of a standalone story.

3. Iron Man (2008)
The film that launched the MCU remains one of its most complete origin stories. Robert Downey Jr.’s charismatic performance gives Tony Stark an immediately watchable voice, but the movie also provides a clear moral transformation: a weapons manufacturer becomes someone willing to take responsibility for the consequences of his inventions. The technology-driven action feels grounded, the supporting cast is well used, and the humor does not erase the seriousness of Tony’s change. Its intelligence, momentum, and sense of fun still make it an unusually strong foundation film.
4. Black Panther (2018)
Ryan Coogler’s film combines political conflict, world-building, memorable production design, and a genuinely compelling antagonist. Wakanda feels like a society with history and internal arguments rather than a backdrop assembled for a fight scene, while Killmonger’s challenge gives T’Challa a conflict that is ideological as well as physical. The third-act visual effects are less consistent than the film’s world and characters, but the cultural impact and richness of the central relationships justify a top-tier position. Rotten Tomatoes currently places it first on its aggregate MCU ranking with a 96% Tomatometer score.
5. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Ragnarok is a near-total reinvention of Thor. Its bright cosmic design, confident comedy, strong music, and odd-couple dynamics give the character a sense of place that the earlier films lacked. Thor, Loki, Valkyrie, and Hulk all become more entertaining without being reduced to the same personality, and the film’s darker stakes remain visible beneath the jokes. It is a new standard for the Thor series, even if its tonal balance occasionally treats tragedy too lightly.
6. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
James Gunn’s most emotionally focused Guardians film is built around Rocket’s history and the idea of family as something chosen, protected, and sometimes released. The film can be heavy—especially compared with the first two entries—but its emotional weight gives the team’s story genuine closure. Rocket, Peter, Nebula, and the rest of the group receive meaningful final movement, while the imaginative creature and location design keeps the film visually distinctive. It is one of the clearest post-Endgame successes.
7. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
This is an ensemble film that works because its ideological disagreement becomes personal tragedy. The Sokovia Accords are not a perfectly rigorous political premise, but the conflict they trigger—especially the collision between Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, and Bucky Barnes—is emotionally legible. The large cast remains surprisingly manageable, and the introductions of Spider-Man and Black Panther add energy without overwhelming the central dispute. Its airport battle is famous, but the quieter consequences are what give the movie staying power.
8. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Marvel’s boldest early gamble introduced an unfamiliar team, a distinctive soundtrack, irreverent humor, and unexpectedly sincere emotional beats. The film makes cosmic Marvel accessible by giving its outsiders recognizable wounds and a simple emotional destination: they become a group that chooses to care about one another. Its visual and musical identity expanded what audiences thought an MCU film could be. Later Guardians movies add depth, but the original remains the franchise’s most startling act of tonal invention.
9. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Fan service is the mechanism of No Way Home, not its entire argument. The multiverse appearances matter because Peter’s attempt to save everyone forces him to confront responsibility, grief, and the cost of refusing an easy solution. The film’s multigenerational appeal is therefore supported by a real moral choice rather than cameos alone. Its audience response has been especially strong: Rotten Tomatoes lists a 96% Popcornmeter score. The plot is more dependent on previous Spider-Man films than the movies above it, but the emotional conclusion earns its place in the top ten.

The high-definition plexiglass panel (with protective peel-off films on both sides) offers crystal-clear visibility. Without a mat, the design maximizes the visible area, allowing artwork to extend seamlessly to the canvas edge.

- Perfect Gift Choice: With a timeless, minimalist design, these frames complement any home décor style. Whether enhancing your bedroom, living room, office, or gallery walls, they also serve as a heartfelt gift for everyone.
10. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Infinity War is an ambitious villain-centered crossover that handles an enormous cast without losing forward momentum. Thanos remains at the center, which gives the film a surprisingly clear spine despite its many settings and character groups. Its ending is unusually bold for a studio blockbuster and lands because the movie has made the threat feel methodical rather than random. The emotional resolution is incomplete by design, so its full power depends on Endgame, but it is still one of the MCU’s most confident large-scale productions.

11. The Avengers (2012)
The first major proof that the shared-universe experiment could work remains highly rewatchable. The character introductions are efficient, the team’s chemistry is immediate, and the Battle of New York delivers a satisfying payoff to the earlier films. Its action grammar and villain are less sophisticated than what came later, but the movie understands that the real event is watching incompatible personalities become a team.
12. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Shang-Chi is one of Phase Four’s clearest successes. Its hand-to-hand choreography, family conflict, and cultural setting give the origin story a strong identity, while the relationship between Shang-Chi, Wenwu, and Ying Nan supplies more substance than the conventional superhero structure might suggest. The final digital-creature battle is less distinctive than the first two acts, but the film earns its position through its movement, performances, and family drama. Rotten Tomatoes lists 92% scores from both critics and audiences.
13. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
This is a smart teen comedy and coming-of-age film that treats Peter Parker’s ordinary life as the story rather than as filler between action scenes. His school obligations, desire to prove himself, and relationship with his mentor create a useful scale for the MCU. Michael Keaton’s Vulture is also unusually personal for a Spider-Man villain in this series. By avoiding another full origin retread, Homecoming leaves room for Peter’s immaturity—and the consequences of trying to skip past it—to drive the film.
14. The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)
The Fantastic Four: First Steps gives Marvel’s First Family a visually coherent retro-futurist identity. Its 1960s-inspired design, family-centered emotional core, and Galactus-scale premise distinguish it from more generic MCU world-building. The cast chemistry is strong, although the structure is not as tight as the films at the top of this list and some of the larger ideas compete for space. Marvel lists the U.S. theatrical release as July 25, 2025, while Rotten Tomatoes records an 86% Tomatometer and 85% Popcornmeter score. Because it is the newest film here, its placement remains provisional compared with movies that have accumulated years of rewatch history.

15. Doctor Strange (2016)
Doctor Strange brings mystical world-building and psychedelic imagery into the MCU with impressive visual confidence. The dimensional effects and inventive action give the film a distinctive surface, while Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance makes Stephen Strange’s arrogance and eventual humility readable. The underlying hero arc is conventional, and some jokes have aged poorly, but the movie successfully expands the franchise’s vocabulary beyond technology, espionage, and cosmic space opera.
16. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
The sequel is looser and less surprising than the original, but it deepens several of the MCU’s most interesting damaged characters. Yondu, Rocket, Nebula, and Peter Quill all receive material about abandonment, resentment, and the possibility of family. The plot is secondary to that emotional work, which explains both the film’s strengths and its uneven pacing. It is almost as entertaining as its predecessor, but it does not have the same freshness. Its closing emotional beat remains one of the series’ most effective.
17. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
This sincere World War II adventure establishes the moral foundation of Captain America effectively. Steve Rogers’ transformation is less about becoming powerful than remaining decent when power arrives, and the period atmosphere gives the film a clean adventure identity. The villains and present-day framing are thinner than the central hero, and the action is not as polished as later MCU entries, but the film’s earnestness is an asset rather than a limitation.
18. Thunderbolts* / The New Avengers (2025)
The appeal of Thunderbolts* lies in its damaged ensemble. Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, and the other secondary figures are united less by noble purpose than by alienation, which gives the group a more interesting starting point than a conventional super-team. The character chemistry is stronger than the action structure, which follows familiar MCU patterns. Marvel confirms the May 2, 2025 release and the later The New Avengers identity associated with the asterisk. The film is a welcome character-driven detour, but not yet a top-tier reinvention.

This breezy post-Endgame road movie gives Peter and Mysterio an entertaining dynamic and uses travel, illusion, and spectacle to explore Peter’s grief. The middle section is enjoyable, but the illusion-heavy structure becomes repetitive and the stakes rely heavily on the emotional and narrative aftermath of the previous saga. It works best as a transition for Peter rather than as a fully independent Spider-Man story.

20. Ant-Man (2015)
Ant-Man benefits from staying small. Its heist-comedy structure, Paul Rudd’s natural charm, and Scott Lang’s clear family motivation provide a welcome change of scale after larger MCU films. The shrinking technology creates inventive action opportunities, and the father-daughter relationship keeps the story grounded. The villain is underwritten and the film’s production history can be felt in its unevenness, but the compact concept gives it an identity that many larger sequels lack.
21–30: worthwhile films with substantial limitations
21. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Wakanda Forever is a respectful and often moving response to Chadwick Boseman’s death. Shuri, Queen Ramonda, Namor, and Talokan provide substantial emotional and political material, and the film takes its grief seriously. Its multiple obligations—memorial, succession story, international conflict, and MCU connective tissue—make the runtime and structure feel unwieldy. Uneven visual effects also weaken some set pieces, leaving it less focused than the original even when its emotional intentions are strong.
22. Captain Marvel (2019)
Brie Larson gives Carol Danvers conviction, while Samuel L. Jackson’s younger Nick Fury and the film’s cosmic setting add useful dimension to the MCU. The movie also has the important task of making a new hero central to the franchise’s next phase. Its nonlinear exposition can feel cumbersome, and the villain is relatively thin, so the origin story lands in the middle of the ranking despite its importance and broad commercial reach. Rotten Tomatoes’ franchise data provides a useful reception and performance cross-check, but neither determines this placement.

23. Iron Man 3 (2013)
Shane Black’s humor, Christmas setting, and focus on Tony Stark’s anxiety distinguish this sequel from the other Iron Man films. The best material is character-driven: Tony is forced to confront fear and vulnerability without relying entirely on the suit. The Mandarin twist remains divisive, and the climax becomes a more generic effects-heavy battle than the middle section deserves. It is an uneven film with a stronger personality than its reputation sometimes suggests.
24. Black Widow (2021)
This grounded spy-family story benefits from the chemistry between Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova. The surrogate family gives Natasha’s guarded personality an emotional counterpoint, and the film’s espionage framing is a welcome change from cosmic stakes. Its biggest limitation is timing: arriving after Natasha’s larger arc had already ended makes the story feel belated. The third act also returns to familiar CGI spectacle, but the character work remains effective.
25. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Age of Ultron is more thematically ambitious than its reputation suggests. Tony Stark’s fear of future catastrophe, the Avengers’ exhaustion, and the team’s uneasy attempt to build security into the world all point toward interesting ideas. The problem is execution: the film is overstuffed, Ultron’s philosophy is underdeveloped, and several subplots compete for attention. It has strong individual scenes and important MCU consequences, but not enough narrative discipline.
26. Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
This high-energy multiverse comedy delivers star chemistry, cameos, meta-humor, and an R-rated tonal break for Marvel Studios. Its entertainment value is real, but its appeal depends heavily on how much a viewer enjoys continuity references and fourth-wall jokes. Fan-service density is not the same thing as dramatic depth, so the film lands here rather than in the top tier. For collectors, Marvel documented home-release formats including 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and digital editions.

The first Thor is a solid mythic origin with good performances from Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston. The contrast between Asgard and a small Earth town gives the film an accessible fish-out-of-water structure, and Loki emerges as a useful source of family conflict. The comedy works better than the climactic action, and the film lacks the visual and tonal confidence of Ragnarok. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 77% Tomatometer score.
28. Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
This pleasant, low-stakes sequel makes good use of shrinking and growing as an action concept. Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne have appealing chemistry, and the film’s lighter tone suits the character. Its limitations are also deliberate: the story has little dramatic weight, and its placement immediately before Infinity War makes that limited consequence more noticeable. It is an enjoyable interlude rather than an essential MCU event.
29. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Sam Raimi’s horror-inflected direction supplies memorable set pieces and a stronger visual personality than the title’s broad multiverse promise might suggest. The problem is that the multiverse itself is not explored as deeply as expected, while the story depends heavily on continuity from earlier films and television projects. The result is an entertaining, occasionally striking Raimi exercise that feels constrained by the sprawling MCU around it.

30. Iron Man 2 (2010)
The cast remains charismatic, and the film introduces or develops important future players, including Natasha Romanoff and elements of the wider Avengers machinery. But multiple villain, corporate, and franchise-setup threads compete for attention. Tony’s personal conflict is less cleanly developed than in the original, making the movie feel transitional. It has considerable franchise value, but its standalone narrative coherence is weak.
31–37: the weakest MCU films in this scope
31. Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Natalie Portman’s return as the Mighty Thor and Christian Bale’s performance as Gorr provide worthwhile dramatic material. The film’s problem is that the comedy is overextended and the tonal shifts repeatedly weaken the emotional stakes, particularly when the story needs to take loss seriously. It is colorful and energetic, but too familiar after Ragnarok. Rotten Tomatoes’ summary captures the issue: it is fun in places but an overly familiar reprise of that earlier film’s formula.
32. The Incredible Hulk (2008)
The Incredible Hulk is a reasonably effective action film, but it has limited connection to the MCU’s later identity. Bruce Banner’s material and the visual effects are uneven, and the recasting of the lead contributes to its outlier status. The film supplies chase scenes and comic-book scale, but the narrative is slight compared with the character-centered origin stories around it. Rotten Tomatoes describes it as action-rich but narratively thin.
33. Thor: The Dark World (2013)
The film contains useful Thor-and-Loki family material and advances the Infinity Stone storyline, but the Dark Elves are weak antagonists and the movie never develops a distinctive visual or tonal identity. Its humor and action occasionally work, yet the central conflict feels procedural. It is important to the franchise’s continuity, but that importance does not translate into a satisfying standalone story.
34. The Marvels (2023)
The short runtime, lighter tone, and chemistry among Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau are genuine strengths. Their contrasting personalities create some of the film’s most enjoyable moments, but the story is cluttered and the villain is underdeveloped. Its continuity dependencies also limit its impact for viewers who have not followed the relevant MCU projects. Rotten Tomatoes records a 63% Tomatometer and 62% Popcornmeter score.
35. Eternals (2021)
Eternals is ambitious in scale and presentation. Its locations, ensemble, and Chloé Zhao’s visual sensibility aim for something more meditative than the standard MCU adventure. However, the large cast receives uneven development, and exposition repeatedly overwhelms the character drama. The 48% Tomatometer score reflects the critical divide, although the audience response is materially more favorable. Its ambition is notable; its storytelling is not consistently controlled enough to support it.
36. Captain America: Brave New World (2025)
Anthony Mackie is a credible new Captain America, but the film struggles to establish a sufficiently strong standalone conflict. It is crowded with continuity hooks and recognizable MCU elements, while its immediate story often feels routine. That makes the movie seem more interested in preserving franchise connections than in giving Sam Wilson a fully developed first theatrical Captain America challenge. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 46% Tomatometer score and criticizes its easter-egg-heavy construction.
37. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
Quantumania is the least successful blend of the Ant-Man series’ grounded comedy and MCU-scale mythology. The Quantum Realm is visually busy but dramatically thin, while Scott’s family dynamics are underused in favor of franchise setup. Kang’s presence feels more important to future planning than to the story happening in this film, and that imbalance drains the adventure of consequence. Rotten Tomatoes lists it at 46%, with a consensus that it lacks the spark of the earlier Ant-Man movies.
Best MCU movies to own physically
For repeat viewing, a Marvel Cinematic Universe Blu-ray collection is the broadest option, but buyers should compare the exact edition, region, included digital code, and current stock before ordering. Marvel’s official home-media pages document 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, digital bundles, SteelBooks, and retailer-specific editions; they do not establish that one retailer always carries a complete 37-film box set.

What separates the best MCU films from the weakest?
- A genre identity: The strongest movies are not simply superhero films. The Winter Soldier is a political thriller, Homecoming is a teen comedy, Ragnarok is a colorful mythic comedy, and Guardians Vol. 3 is a family drama.
- A legible emotional problem: Crossovers work when the spectacle expresses a character conflict. Endgame, Civil War, Infinity War, and No Way Home all give their enormous plots a personal consequence.
- Continuity that supports rather than replaces the story: Shared-universe connections are most effective when they raise the stakes of the film in front of you. They are weakest when setup for future projects becomes more important than resolution in the current one.
- Controlled scale: A film does not improve simply because its final battle is bigger. Ant-Man benefits from its compact heist structure, while Quantumania demonstrates how spectacle can become visually elaborate but dramatically thin.
The overall pattern is clear: the MCU’s best movies know what kind of film they are before they connect themselves to a larger universe. The weakest tend to confuse franchise maintenance with story resolution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which MCU movies are included in this 37-film ranking?
This ranking covers the 37 Marvel Studios MCU theatrical films from Iron Man (2008) through The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025). It includes Thunderbolts*, later associated with The New Avengers, and all three Ant-Man films. It excludes MCU television projects, animated features, one-shots, and films outside the defined Marvel Studios MCU slate.
Why is The Fantastic Four: First Steps ranked No. 14?
The ranking is provisional because The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the newest film in the scope. Its retro-futurist design, family-centered story, and cast chemistry place it at No. 14, but it has not had as many years of rewatch history as the established MCU films.
Is Thunderbolts* the same movie as The New Avengers?
Thunderbolts* is included because it is one of the 37 Marvel Studios theatrical films in the defined scope. The film is also associated with the later team identity The New Avengers.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with Avengers: Endgame for the biggest emotional payoff, Captain America: The Winter Soldier for the best standalone film, or Iron Man for the cleanest origin story. The newest entries—The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Thunderbolts*—are promising additions with clear identities, but their long-term ranking remains less settled than that of the MCU’s established favorites.
