Alien: Romulus opened with an estimated $109.9 million worldwide over August 16–18, 2024, according to The Walt Disney Company’s contemporaneous report. That opening-weekend estimate is distinct from the film’s later lifetime total: Box Office Mojo lists a worldwide gross of $350,865,342 in records accessed October 4, 2026.
What was Alien: Romulus’s global debut?
Disney reported an estimated worldwide opening of $109.9 million for the August 16–18, 2024 weekend, including an estimated $41.8 million from the domestic market. Disney also said the film opened at No. 1 domestically. These are the distributor’s initial weekend estimates, not the film’s final worldwide earnings. The Walt Disney Company’s August 18, 2024 report gives the contemporaneous figures.

Early weekend estimates were not identical across reports: another contemporary estimate put the worldwide opening at $108.2 million. The difference reflects reporting at the estimate stage; it is not a reason to treat an opening estimate as a lifetime gross.
How much has the film made in total?
Box Office Mojo’s records, accessed October 4, 2026, list Alien: Romulus at $350,865,342 worldwide, comprising $105,313,091 domestic and $245,552,251 international. The same database lists a domestic opening of $42,003,361. Database totals can be revised, so these are figures as recorded on that access date, rather than a claim that the records can never change. Box Office Mojo’s film record separates the opening and cumulative grosses.

The $41.8 million and $42,003,361 domestic-opening figures come from different reporting states: an initial estimate and a current database record. They should not be presented as if they were the same kind of figure.
How did the opening rank?
Disney characterized the $41.8 million domestic opening as the second-biggest domestic opening in the then-current Alien series and the biggest opening of director Fede Alvarez’s career. Separately, Disney UK Press described the worldwide result as the second-highest opening in the franchise’s 45-year history at the time. The latter is the distributor’s contemporaneous global framing, not a domestic ranking. Disney UK Press’s August 19, 2024 announcement also reported a £3.74 million UK and Ireland opening and a 28% market share. That regional figure is not the worldwide total.

What is the film, and when did it arrive?
Alien: Romulus is a science-fiction horror thriller about young space colonizers scavenging a derelict station who encounter a dangerous life form. The story is set chronologically after Ridley Scott’s 1979 Alien. Fede Alvarez directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Rodo Sayagues. The listed cast includes Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. 20th Century Studios’ film page lists the U.S. release date as August 16, 2024, an R rating, and a runtime of 1 hour 59 minutes.
Alvarez described the creative aim in Disney’s August 18 report: “the whole point of this movie was to take back Alien to the simplicity of the beginning of the franchise, where it was, above all things, a horror movie.”

What do the budget and home-video records show?
The Numbers lists an $80 million production budget. This is a database-reported production-budget figure, not a verified total for marketing and distribution costs, so it cannot by itself establish profitability. The Numbers also records October 15, 2024 as the home-video release date; the consulted record does not specify an edition or format. The Numbers’ film record is the source for both entries.
