The first reactions to Alien: Romulus were largely positive about its scares, atmosphere, creature work and performances—but they were not unanimous. The main fault lines were whether the film’s franchise callbacks feel like affectionate homage or familiar repetition, and whether its divisive final act works. These are premiere-window impressions from August 2024, not a new 2026 poll or a verdict shared by every viewer.
What were the first reactions to Alien: Romulus?
Social reactions appeared around August 13, 2024, ahead of the film’s U.S. theatrical release on August 16. GameSpot’s August 13 roundup characterized the early response as generally positive while noting mixed and negative takes. The film is set between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), following young colonists scavenging an abandoned space station—a setup that helps explain why some viewers welcomed its links to the series’ past while others wanted more distance from them. Rotten Tomatoes’ first-reviews roundup displayed an 80% Tomatometer in its 2024 context; that is a historical snapshot, not a current score or a measure of all audience opinion.
These were qualitative reactions from critics and other early viewers, not a representative audience survey. They offer a useful guide to the film’s strengths and sticking points, but not proof that every audience will respond the same way.
What did early viewers praise?
Scares and body horror
Frightening set pieces, suspense and gore were among the most frequent points of praise. The Rotten Tomatoes roundup highlights reactions to jump scares, body horror and squeamish-making thrills. Even a mixed reaction cited by GameSpot acknowledged the scares’ effectiveness, suggesting that the film’s horror craft could land for viewers who were less convinced by other elements.

Sets, visuals and creature effects
Early responses also singled out the station’s atmosphere, practical effects, creature design and cinematography. In Variety’s August 13, 2024 coverage, Tessa Smith praised the use of practical effects, while another reaction praised the real sets. The attention to physical environments and visual craft was a recurring source of enthusiasm, including among viewers more divided on the story.
Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson
Cailee Spaeny, who plays Rain, drew praise for making the lead compelling and emotionally credible. David Jonsson’s performance as Andy was often described as a standout. Variety critic Courtney Howard wrote that “Cailee Spaeny & David Jonsson dominate,” while GameSpot’s roundup also records strong responses to both performances. GameSpot’s collection includes praise as well as more critical reactions, so the acting response was strong but not universal.

Why were the franchise callbacks divisive?
Some viewers liked how Romulus draws on the look and history of earlier Alien films. The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit praised its familiar hallmarks while saying it did not feel like it was pandering to nostalgia or fan service. Variety’s Courtney Howard similarly called the film “subtly playing the greatest hits.” For these viewers, recognizable elements could make the movie feel connected to the series without preventing it from trying new things.
Others saw the familiarity as a weakness. GameSpot’s roundup includes reactions that found the film derivative or overly reliant on franchise references, and Phil Hornshaw’s August 14, 2024 theatrical-release review adds a more critical perspective. Isaac Feldberg called the film “dispiritingly lifeless,” arguing that its familiar aesthetic lacked some of the unsettling substance that made the original distinctive.

The disagreement is not simply about whether the movie contains callbacks; it is about whether those callbacks add meaning or crowd out the film’s own identity. That distinction helps explain how one viewer could call it a satisfying homage and another a less distinctive franchise entry.
Did the ending work for early viewers?
The final act was one of the most divisive parts of the early response. Some viewers found its escalation audacious, frightening or memorable; others thought it became overburdened, lost thematic focus or failed to land. The disagreement is also reflected in GamesRadar+’s early-reactions roundup and Variety’s coverage. Because the criticism concerns the experience of the finale, this summary avoids describing its events.

Mark McPherson of Film Inquiry captured the split in a reaction collected by GamesRadar+: he liked creative moments in the first two acts, but said the finale’s “BIG swing” did not work for him. That is a useful counterweight to the viewers who found the late-film escalation the film’s boldest move. Early impressions do not establish one shared verdict on the ending.

The fairest summary of the premiere-window reaction is positive, with substantial disagreement over originality, character writing and the ending. If you are most interested in suspense, production design, creature effects and performances, the early praise points to clear strengths. If you are sensitive to familiar franchise references, underdeveloped supporting characters or a finale that takes a conspicuous swing, the reservations are just as relevant.

Amelia Emberwing of IGN, quoted by GameSpot, praised the effective scares but said the set pieces felt like “a video game level, theme park ride intro, or horror nights maze,” and that the character work did not connect for her. That mixed response illustrates why “critics loved it” would overstate the evidence: enthusiasm for the film’s horror and craft coexisted with real reservations about how it tells its story.
How to read the early scores and reactions
The 80% Tomatometer shown in Rotten Tomatoes’ first-reviews context belongs to that 2024 roundup, not necessarily to the site’s current listing. It should be read alongside the individual reactions, not as a substitute for them. Social posts and a first-reviews snapshot can show what some early viewers responded to, but they cannot establish a representative audience consensus or settle how the film’s ending will work for you.
