Alien: Romulus opened with an estimated $41.8 million at the domestic box office in August 2024, according to 20th Century Studios. That made it the second-biggest domestic opening in the current Alien series, behind Prometheus.
How much did Alien: Romulus make on opening weekend?
20th Century Studios reported on August 18, 2024, that Alien: Romulus earned an estimated $41.8 million domestically over its opening weekend and took the No. 1 spot at the U.S. box office. The studio described it as the second-biggest domestic opening in the current Alien series. 20th Century Studios’ report also quotes director Fede Alvarez describing the film’s aim as returning the series to “the simplicity of the beginning of the franchise, where it was, above all things, a horror movie.”

Box Office Mojo lists the opening at $42,003,361 and gives the U.S. release date as August 16, 2024. That database figure and the studio’s $41.8 million estimate reflect different reporting conventions; they should not be treated as identical figures. Box Office Mojo’s listing provides the exact database amount.
Was it the biggest Alien opening?
No. In The Numbers’ franchise table, Prometheus holds the larger domestic opening, with $51,050,101, compared with Alien: Romulus at $42,003,361. The comparison below uses the table’s nominal domestic dollar figures; it is not adjusted for inflation. The Numbers’ franchise table lists both opening weekends and domestic totals.

The Numbers’ listed domestic totals also put Prometheus ahead over its full theatrical run. These are database totals in nominal dollars, not inflation-adjusted measures of ticket sales or audience size. The available figures establish box-office revenue, not how many tickets were sold.

Alien: Romulus had a strong launch and ranked second among domestic openings in the current series, but its opening did not surpass Prometheus. Its listed domestic lifetime gross likewise remained below Prometheus in The Numbers’ franchise table. Those comparisons are limited to domestic box-office dollars: they do not combine worldwide revenue or compare audience admissions.
