Warning: spoilers for “Neverland” and “Mr. October.”
The first two episodes of Alien: Earth open with the franchise’s familiar terror—an alien threat loose among people—then widen the story to corporate rivalry and the possibility of moving human consciousness into synthetic bodies. Alan Sepinwall’s August 13, 2025 review finds the premiere thrilling and often gruesome, though less consistent in its larger ideas and some choices about how the Xenomorph is shown.
What happens in “Neverland” and “Mr. October”?
The story begins in 2120, two years before the events of Ridley Scott’s 1979 Alien. Aboard the Weyland-Yutani research vessel USCSS Maginot, the crew has collected dangerous alien specimens, including a Xenomorph. When the ship crashes on Earth, its cargo turns the crash site into a source of immediate danger.
Wendy, a young hybrid, is drawn into the response because of her connection to her brother, Hermit. Around that survival story, the series introduces Prodigy founder Boy Kavalier’s effort to transfer human consciousness into synthetic bodies. The conflict is not just about containing creatures: it is also about who controls powerful technology and what counts as a human life.

Why the opening delivers creature horror
Sepinwall argues that the Maginot prologue gives the audience enough context to make the crash-site sequence more frightening: viewers understand that the danger is not a single unknown creature, but a collection of alien specimens loose on Earth. The episodes use memorable, grotesque images to build that unease, including a blood-eating bug and a tentacled eyeball emerging from a cat’s skull.

The Xenomorph remains the central franchise draw. Sepinwall praises the scale and spectacle, along with several creature effects, but says some CGI looks dodgy. He also notes that many of the creature’s kills happen off-screen, a choice that can blunt the impact of a scene built around the monster.
The review’s sharpest tonal image arrives at a French-themed party, where the creature’s violence reads as an “eating the rich” moment. It is both a grotesque horror beat and a pointed expression of the show’s interest in power and wealth.

Where corporate power and synthetic bodies enter the story
The series sets its action in a world governed by five corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic, and Threshold. ABC’s official series page says Weyland-Yutani’s ship collides with Prodigy City, where Wendy and other hybrids encounter alien life forms. The same page credits Noah Hawley as creator and executive producer. ABC’s official Alien: Earth series page
That corporate landscape gives the opening a wider frame than a crash-and-survive story. Kavalier’s consciousness-transfer project introduces a question of identity and ownership alongside the threat of the aliens. The Walt Disney Company says Hawley sought to focus on human drama and philosophical inquiry as well as the monsters. He has described the challenge this way: “The first thing you have to do is figure out how the monsters work in the show, because the point of the show can’t be the monsters, otherwise you have a very short show.” The Walt Disney Company on Noah Hawley and Alien: Earth

For Sepinwall, that broader ambition is promising but more mixed than the horror. The two episodes are strongest when corporate ideas and character loyalties intensify the immediate danger; the larger themes have not yet proved as compelling as the creature sequences.
What works less well in the first two episodes?
Sepinwall questions how Hermit can escape the danger and then compartmentalize it, finding the character’s response difficult to accept. He also calls Morrow’s use of a taser rifle an awkward shortcut. These are matters of dramatic plausibility, not problems with the basic premise, but they can interrupt the suspense when the show asks viewers to accept a character’s choices in the middle of a crisis.

The off-screen kills create a related trade-off: withholding violence can preserve tension, but Sepinwall feels the choice sometimes keeps the Xenomorph’s attacks from landing with full force. The result is an opening he likes overall, rather than a uniformly effective one. As he puts it, “But this is a pretty thrilling start to Hawley’s new chapter in this old story.”

The two-episode launch draws on familiar Alien ingredients—a Weyland-Yutani vessel, a Xenomorph, and a confined disaster—while shifting the focus to Earth and a contest among corporations. The hybrid and synthetic-body storyline offers a way into questions that are broader than creature survival, and it gives the series room to build beyond the monster-of-the-week threat.
That balance is the opening’s central promise and its main test. The creature horror already has vivid set pieces; the corporate and immortality plot needs to make its characters and stakes equally gripping. Sepinwall’s verdict is that the show starts with enough thrills and chills to make that larger story worth following, even if it does not yet match the monsters beat for beat.
