What authorities said when the couple were found
The Witts were found dead in their Worcester, Massachusetts, home on December 20, 2021, after a family member requested a welfare check. How the cold and furnace reports fit in
Early coverage mentioned reported furnace trouble and use of a space heater, but those circumstances were not established as the cause. The later certificate reporting identified probable cardiac dysrhythmia with terminal cold exposure; it does not establish that a particular appliance or equipment failure caused the deaths.
The Independent reported that the temperature fell to 15°F (−9°C) on the night before the deaths, citing the National Weather Service and describing it as December’s coldest night. [c005]

What Alicia Witt said about checking on her parents
Witt said she had not heard from her parents for several days and asked a nearby cousin to check on them. In a January 2022 statement, she said she had not been allowed into their home for well over a decade and had repeatedly offered to arrange repairs. These details are her account. [c004]
