Alice Brock, the artist and former restaurateur whose Thanksgiving visit inspired Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” died on November 21, 2024, at age 83. The Washington Post reported that she died at a hospice in Wellfleet from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; the Associated Press’s initial report said details were not immediately available. Brock’s connection to the song began with a real 1965 trash-dumping episode, but her life extended well beyond the story that made her famous.
Who was the real Alice in “Alice’s Restaurant”?
Alice Brock was born Alice May Pelkey. She met Arlo Guthrie around 1962, when he was a student at the Stockbridge School in Massachusetts and she worked there as the librarian. The two remained friends.
The name can be misleading: Brock’s restaurant was not originally called Alice’s Restaurant. Her first restaurant was The Back Room, which she opened in Stockbridge in 1966. “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” is the name of Guthrie’s long narrative song; Alice’s Restaurant is also the title of his 1967 album, which included the song.
What happened on Thanksgiving 1965?
On Thanksgiving Day in 1965, Guthrie and his friend Richard Robbins visited the Brocks and helped them get rid of trash. The local dump was closed, so the men dumped the refuse down a hill. They were charged with illegal dumping and each was fined $25, for a total of $50.

Guthrie later turned the episode into the song’s comic, talk-sung narrative, connecting the littering charge to his subsequent experience with the draft board. That is the song’s storytelling arc, not evidence that a minor dumping conviction automatically disqualified someone from military service.
How the incident became a song, album and film
The song and 1967 album
Guthrie released the album Alice’s Restaurant in 1967. The title track, commonly called “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” expanded the Thanksgiving incident into a long performance that became a recurring Thanksgiving radio favorite. The Associated Press described the album as Guthrie’s million-selling debut, without giving a specific sales total or certification.

The 1969 film
Arthur Penn’s 1969 film Alice’s Restaurant was based on the song. Brock made a cameo, while actor Patricia Quinn portrayed her.
What Alice Brock did after the song’s success
Brock continued her restaurant career. In 1971 she opened Take Out Alice in Housatonic, which later expanded as Alice’s Restaurant. She opened Alice’s at Avaloch in 1976, left restaurant work in 1979 and moved to Provincetown. There she worked as a painter and gallery owner, and she wrote books including Alice’s Restaurant Cookbook and the memoir My Life as a Restaurant.

Fame brought mixed feelings. In a 1978 comment reported by The Washington Post, Brock said, “I don’t feel very good about having people point at me and say, ‘That’s her.’” She also spoke warmly about the song’s association with her, calling it “a lot of fun” and saying it carried “a message of all the right things: of hope and music.”

In 2022, Brock, Guthrie and Robbins reunited for Thanksgiving, their first such gathering since 1965. Brock died two years later, on November 21, 2024, aged 83. The story behind the song is a small episode of friendship, a closed dump and an ill-advised place to leave trash. Brock’s own story was broader: she ran restaurants, made and exhibited art, wrote books and lived with the public attention attached to a song that borrowed her name.
