Looking back in a 2018 interview with People, Ali MacGraw said she wished she and Steve McQueen “had both grown old sober.” She also described their relationship as a mix of wonderful and dreadful times and said, “I’m not a victim in any way.” Her remarks were a retrospective account of a complicated relationship—not a claim that it was simple or one-sided.
What Ali MacGraw said about Steve McQueen
MacGraw made the comments in a 2018 People interview, reported by Yahoo. She recalled both “wonderful days and dreadful days” and said, “There were many times that were just wonderful and there were many times that were just ghastly.” Her central wish was: “I wish we had both grown old sober.”

She also rejected the idea that she saw herself only as someone harmed by the relationship: “I’m not a victim in any way.” Taken together, the remarks hold two ideas at once: the relationship brought real happiness and real pain, and MacGraw did not describe her own role or experience in victim-only terms. These are her personal recollections, as quoted in Yahoo’s account of the interview.
How their relationship began and ended
From The Getaway to a relationship
MacGraw was already known for Love Story when she and McQueen costarred in The Getaway (1972). Retrospective profiles connect the film’s production with the beginning of their romance. A 2010 Vanity Fair account describes their relationship as passionate, dramatic, and hurtful.

#1 Best Overall
The separation and McQueen’s death
Yahoo’s 2018 report says the couple split after five tumultuous years and that McQueen died of cancer three years later. Vanity Fair dates his death to November 1980 and identifies the cancer as lung cancer. Those accounts establish the broad sequence without requiring a more precise marriage or divorce date.
