Eric LaRue looks beyond the act of violence to the family and community left to live with its consequences. In interviews about the film, director Michael Shannon and playwright-screenwriter Brett Neveu discuss adapting Neveu’s 2002 play, while Shannon offers a glimpse of what he wanted from Judy Greer’s performance as Janice LaRue. Greer plays Janice, and Alexander Skarsgård plays her husband, Ron.
What Eric LaRue is about
The film follows Janice and Ron after their teenage son commits a school shooting. Rather than presenting the shooting as a procedural account, the drama stays with its aftermath: Janice’s anger and grief, the family’s guilt, and the pressures of faith and community.

Magnolia Pictures’ synopsis describes Janice as moving through life in a haze, unable to release her anger and frustration. Ron has found refuge in a new church; Janice, by contrast, struggles to find solace in her faith. Her pastor urges her to seek healing within the congregation, but the film’s central question is whether there is any established path to healing after an experience like this. Magnolia Pictures’ film page provides the distributor’s synopsis.
Shannon and Neveu bring the play to the screen
Eric LaRue is Michael Shannon’s feature directorial debut. It adapts a 2002 stage play by Brett Neveu, who also wrote the screenplay. In an interview with Newcity Film, Shannon and Neveu discuss the adaptation and the choices involved in bringing the story to film.
#1 Best Overall
- Good product with good quality
- Easy to use
- Value for money
Shannon has described the casting ambition behind Janice in a concise line about Greer: “I wanted someone to be a little bit more. And she delivered, yeah.” He made the remark about Greer’s performance in the Newcity Film interview published April 1, 2025.
Why the story stays with the aftermath
The film’s focus on the parents makes room for questions that a crime-centered account might leave aside: how a family faces public judgment, what faith can offer when comfort is difficult to find, and whether guilt or atonement can be made simple. A RogerEbert.com interview frames the film around gun violence, faith, and the limits of easy answers about healing. That framing is about the drama’s concerns, not a claim that the film supplies policy analysis.

The supporting cast includes Alison Pill, Tracy Letts, Paul Sparks, and Annie Parisse, according to Magnolia Pictures’ press notes. The same notes identify the production as a 2025 US film and record its world premiere in the 2023 Tribeca Festival’s Narrative Spotlight, followed by selections at the 2023 Chicago and Denver festivals. The festival premiere year and the production year are distinct dates, not conflicting descriptions.
Runtime and screening information
Eric LaRue runs 119 minutes and is in English, according to the IU Cinema listing. IU Cinema scheduled a March 27, 2026 screening with Neveu and Shannon, including an onstage conversation and post-film Q&A. The Indiana Daily Student also reported on the event and described the film’s attention to the shooting’s aftermath through the perpetrator’s mother.
