The case is also tied to two other confirmed victims, Francis McDonnell and Billy Gaffney. Larger victim totals and lurid details repeated in later accounts should not be treated as established facts without supporting records.
What is established about the case?
The New York State Unified Court System’s county-history account provides the broad legal outcome: Fish stood trial for Grace Budd’s murder and was executed at Sing Sing in 1936. The case bibliography identifies the prosecution as People of the State of New York v. Albert Fish, Westchester County, Indictment No. 15-1935. Read the New York Courts county history.
A case archive identifies three confirmed victims: Francis McDonnell, Billy Gaffney, and Grace Budd. It distinguishes those cases from other suspicions that did not lead to charges. The figure of three is therefore the archive’s confirmed-victim count, not a complete accounting of every suspicion associated with Fish. See the case archive’s biography and case material.
How did investigators trace Fish?
The archive says a letter sent to the Budd family helped investigators trace Fish and arrest him in December 1934. That account offers secondary context for how the investigation developed; the underlying investigative and trial records have not been independently reviewed here, so the detailed sequence should not be mistaken for a direct quotation from those records. A scholarly chapter result also gives limited contextual support for the letter’s investigative role, but its full text was not available for review. The archive’s arrest account.

Does a court transcript of the trial exist?
A reader has asked, “Does anyone know if a court transcript exists on the trial of Albert Fish?” That question points to a real distinction: a bibliography that names trial materials is not itself a transcript, and the sources reviewed here do not establish that a complete transcript is publicly available.
The case bibliography identifies trial exhibits including the Budd letter, a pelvic X-ray, and a confession statement. Those entries help show what kinds of material were associated with the prosecution, but the exhibits themselves were not independently examined; their presence in a bibliography does not verify their contents or provide a transcript of testimony. Consult the archive bibliography.

For New York court records, the Unified Court System explains that requests can be directed to the relevant clerk and that access depends on the type of record. Anyone seeking a transcript or exhibit should ask the appropriate clerk what survives, what can be accessed, and what identifying information is needed. New York Courts: court records.

The case invites sensational retellings, but a responsible account separates legal findings from later narrative. Fish’s conviction concerned Grace Budd’s murder; the archive’s three confirmed-victim count is distinct from additional suspicions. Details attributed to Fish, witnesses, or officials should not be presented as quotations unless checked against a reliable original record. Likewise, the bibliography’s listings of investigative, correctional, psychiatric, and press materials are useful leads, not proof that those records have been consulted.

For further reading, Harold Schechter’s Deranged: The Shocking True Story of America’s Most Fiendish Killer is a case-specific secondary account, not a substitute for court records. The bibliography also lists Mel Heimer’s The Cannibal (1971) and John Borowski’s documentary (2007). Treat these as later works whose claims should be distinguished from the court’s findings and from original records. The bibliography lists these works.
