Brenda Song said Alaska Airlines changed her family’s first-class seating on the morning of a flight, separating her and Macaulay Culkin from their two young children. The airline called the experience unacceptable and said it had contacted the family. The reports reviewed do not explain why the seating changed or confirm how the matter was ultimately resolved.
What Brenda Song said happened
In an Instagram Story posted March 21, 2026, Song said the family of six had booked first-class tickets about six months in advance for a birthday trip. She said their seats were given away on the morning of travel without warning, leaving her and Culkin separated from their three- and four-year-old children.
Contemporaneous reports identified the children as Dakota, four, and Carson, three. Song’s account is the basis for the reported details about the booking and seating change; the coverage does not independently establish what happened operationally. The route was not reported.
“I didn’t know when you book your first class tickets 6 months in advance for your family of six and your son’s birthday—@alaskaair can just give away your seats the morning of with no warning—splitting up you and your 3 and 4 year old kids. We will never fly @alaskaair again and neither should you.”

What remains unclear
The available reports do not say why the seating changed, whether a particular operational issue was involved, or what the family and airline agreed to privately. They also do not establish that the airline intentionally gave the seats to someone else. The public statement acknowledges the guests’ experience but does not provide a detailed explanation of the change.

TravelPulse reported that Alaska’s website guarantees children age 13 or younger a seat next to at least one accompanying adult at no additional cost when they are booked on the same reservation. That secondary report does not establish whether this family’s booking met the stated condition, and it does not explain the reported first-class seating change. Travelers should check Alaska’s current official policy and their reservation details rather than assume the reported policy resolves this incident.
