What happened to Alan Bergman?
The Television Academy records Bergman’s date of death as July 17, 2025. The Associated Press and The Washington Post reported that he died at home in the Los Angeles area; the reports attributed the respiratory-issues detail to family spokesperson Ken Sunshine. That is a reported circumstance, not a confirmed medical cause. (Television Academy; Associated Press; The Washington Post)
Who was Alan Bergman?
Bergman was a lyricist: he wrote words for songs, often with his wife Marilyn, alongside composers who supplied the music. The precision matters because his legacy is not simply a list of hits. It is a body of work built through a sustained partnership that moved between film, television and popular music.
Born in New York on September 11, 1925, Bergman grew up in Brooklyn and, according to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, decided at age ten that he wanted to write songs. He studied music and theater at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, then studied music at UCLA. He later worked as a television director at Philadelphia station WCAU-TV while writing songs on the side. Encouraged by songwriter Johnny Mercer, he returned to Los Angeles to pursue songwriting full time. (Songwriters Hall of Fame; Television Academy)

Songs and screen work that made the Bergmans widely known
Film songs
- “The Windmills of Your Mind” — Written with Michel Legrand for The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), it won an Oscar.
- “The Way We Were” — Written with Marvin Hamlisch for the 1973 film of the same name and performed by Barbra Streisand, it became one of the partnership’s signature songs. The AP described it as the top-selling song of 1974.
- Yentl (1983) — The Bergmans and Legrand won an Oscar for the film’s song score/adaptation work on Barbra Streisand’s film.
- Other recognizable songs — Their credits include “In the Heat of the Night,” “It Might Be You” from Tootsie, “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” and “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?”
Oscar dates can vary in accounts that refer to a film’s release year versus the ceremony or award year. The clearest way to identify the major songs is by title and film rather than assume those dates are interchangeable. (Songwriters Hall of Fame; Associated Press; Los Angeles Times)
Television themes
Their work also reached viewers through theme songs for Maude, Good Times and Alice, as well as credits for Bracken’s World and Brooklyn Bridge. Television themes gave the partnership a different kind of audience: songs heard repeatedly in people’s homes, attached to the characters and rhythms of a series. Why the Bergmans’ songs endure
Their lyrics often served the emotional point of a scene without calling attention to the mechanics of the writing. Barbra Streisand described their songs as going “straight to emotion,” a quality that suited stories built around memory, longing and change. It is part of why songs such as “The Way We Were” remain recognizable outside the films and shows for which they were written. (The Washington Post)
