The abrupt presentation confused many viewers, according to the Associated Press. Pacino later said the omission followed the producers’ plan, which they tied to the ceremony’s running time.
What happened when Al Pacino presented Best Picture?
Pacino was the final presenter of the night. Instead of naming all ten Best Picture nominees, he moved directly to the winner. The Associated Press described his lead-in as “And the Oscar goes to …” followed by “my eyes see ‘Oppenheimer.’” The film won the award at the March 10 ceremony.
Because viewers did not hear the nominees named immediately before the winner, the announcement felt abrupt. AP reported that many viewers were confused by the moment.
Why didn’t Al Pacino read the Best Picture nominees?
Pacino said the decision not to repeat the nominee names came from the producers. In a statement reported by AP on March 11, 2024, he explained: “I just want to be clear it was not my intention to omit them, rather a choice by the producers not to have them said again since they were highlighted individually throughout the ceremony. I was honored to be a part of the evening and chose to follow the way they wished for this award to be presented.”

Oscars producer Molly McNearney told Variety, as reported by AP, that the ten Best Picture clip packages had already been shown and the production team was worried the show would run long. “It was a creative decision we made because we were very worried that the show was going to be long,” she said. McNearney also apologized if the choice left Pacino in a difficult position: “I apologize if our decision to not have to read through all those nominations put him in a tough spot.”

AP reported that many viewers were confused by the abrupt delivery. The omission also prompted criticism or concern that the other nominees had not been fully recognized in the final award presentation. Pacino expressed empathy with nominees who were hurt by that choice.
The available AP account does not establish how widespread those reactions were across the entire audience or social platforms, so the response should not be treated as unanimous or quantified. Read the Associated Press report on Pacino’s explanation and the producers’ decision.
