Al Jardine said he saw Brian Wilson in May 2025, about a month before Wilson died on June 11. During that visit, Wilson looked at Jardine and said, “You started the group,” according to Jardine’s interview with Rolling Stone, reproduced by The LP Lab. Jardine thanked him and credited Wilson’s role in the Beach Boys’ beginnings.
What happened at Jardine’s final visit with Wilson?
Jardine recalled that he and his wife, Mary Ann, visited Wilson at his home in May 2025, roughly a month before Wilson’s death. The exact day was not reported. In the Rolling Stone interview, Wilson’s remark is quoted as, “You started the group.” PEOPLE’s account, published by AOL, renders it as, “You started the band.” Both reports describe the same essential exchange; the wording differs by source.
In the Rolling Stone account, Jardine said he thanked Wilson and acknowledged that Wilson had helped bring the group together. The brief recognition carried weight because Jardine had long described himself as the one who first suggested they form a band.
Why Wilson’s words echoed their origin story
Jardine told PEOPLE that he met Wilson at El Camino Junior College and proposed that they start a group. In Jardine’s recollection, Wilson then suggested inviting his younger brother Carl and their cousin Mike Love. This is Jardine’s account of their early conversation, not a transcript recorded at the time.

The Beach Boys’ official biography says the band was founded in Hawthorne, California, in 1961. Its original lineup included Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine. Wilson’s remark to Jardine therefore acknowledged a specific part of the band’s formation while leaving room for the wider contributions of the other founding members.
A friendship and musical partnership that continued
Their relationship extended well beyond the group’s early years. Jardine told Rolling Stone that he joined Wilson’s solo band for a Pet Sounds tour in 2006 and began touring regularly with him in 2012. Jardine remembered performing together again as feeling like the old Beach Boys days.

The interview reports agree on the central point: Jardine visited Wilson in May 2025, and Wilson recognized Jardine’s role in getting the group started. PEOPLE’s account adds that Jardine and Mary Ann stopped at Wilson’s home while traveling toward Carmel. Neither report gives a precise date for the meeting, so it is best described as occurring in May, about a month before Wilson died.
