During his Palco Mundo performance on Sunday, September 22, Akon climbed into a giant inflatable ball with help from stage assistants and attempted to move toward the audience. Akon said São Paulo while addressing Rio
In a separate moment, gshow reported that Akon said “São Paulo” while speaking to the audience in Rio de Janeiro. The crowd responded by chanting Rio’s name, according to the report. This was a verbal gaffe, distinct from the failed inflatable-ball stunt. gshow covered the mistake alongside the stunt.
What is known about playback criticism
Audience members suspected that the performance relied on playback, and Folha’s festival retrospective criticized Akon’s set in that respect. The reviewed coverage does not provide technical verification or a production statement establishing how much of the show used playback. It is therefore more accurate to describe playback as a subject of audience suspicion and critical commentary than as a verified technical finding. Festival-wide sound and screen complaints are separate
Folha also reported low sound at some Rock in Rio performances, citing Katy Perry, and repeated problems with the festival’s large screen. Those were observations about the wider event; the reporting does not establish that each problem affected Akon’s set. The festival’s 2024 edition marked its 40th anniversary and ended on September 22 after seven days. gshow’s retrospective describes attendance as hundreds of thousands across the festival, without a precise Akon-show attendance figure.
