AJ Styles retired from in-ring competition in 2026, but he did not leave WWE. He has said he wants to help younger wrestlers prepare and build confidence, and reporting since his retirement describes him scouting prospects, working with talent at the Performance Center, producing matches and contributing to Evolve. WWE also announced his induction into the 2026 Hall of Fame class.
What AJ Styles said about his retirement
Styles announced on October 10, 2025, that 2026 would be his final year as an in-ring performer. The announcement was about competing in the ring—not a declaration that he would leave WWE. WWE’s announcement established the planned end of his in-ring career.
In February 2026, Styles described himself as retired from wrestling in the ring while saying he would continue working with WWE. Speaking on Talk N Shop, he said, “I’m still going to be working with WWE, that’s not going to change.” He also explained his aim: “I have these dreams and aspirations of helping out the younger talent and helping them get ready.” POST Wrestling reported his remarks.
How he is helping WWE’s next generation
Scouting independent talent
Styles has described watching independent wrestling shows and looking for prospects. In remarks reported by Wrestling Observer/F4WOnline on March 29, 2026, he said: “I’ve been going to indie shows and checking those out, just seeing what everyone has to offer and stuff like that.” He also said he was “scouring the internet for something that sticks out” and hoped to spot talent “before it’s developed.”

Working with talent and producing matches
A later interview report adds more detail. In a July 21, 2026 interview with Chris Van Vliet, Styles discussed visiting WWE’s Performance Center, working with its wrestlers, producing matches and involvement with Evolve. He reflected that he seemed to be around WWE more after retiring than when he was an active wrestler, and called the chance to work with the men and women at the Performance Center “pretty awesome.”
These activities are best understood as a developing set of responsibilities, not one settled job title. April reporting described Styles as “wearing a couple of different hats” while recruiting and helping WWE’s ID program; the exact scope and schedule may change.

Styles was announced for the 2026 WWE Hall of Fame
WWE announced Styles as a member of its Hall of Fame Class of 2026. The company said The Undertaker delivered the news during Styles’ farewell in Georgia. WWE’s announcement confirms the induction as a milestone separate from his ongoing work with the company.

Styles has not ruled out the possibility of one more match categorically. In the July 2026 interview, he gave a “never say never” response, so his retirement from regular in-ring competition should not be recast as proof that he could never appear in a match again. That possibility is different from his stated current focus: continuing with WWE and helping develop talent.
