Aisling Bea is an Irish actor, comedian, writer and stand-up performer whose work spans television comedy, panel shows and the stage. She created, wrote and starred in Channel 4’s comedy-drama This Way Up, a series that helped establish her as a writer-performer as well as an actor.
Who is Aisling Bea?
Bea works across acting, writing and stand-up comedy; her official website also describes her as an MC. Her career combines scripted roles with live and television comedy, rather than sitting within a single category of performance. Her official interview archive identifies her professional range.
How did Aisling Bea get into comedy?
Bea graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a BA in 2006, according to the university’s alumni profile. While studying there, she took part in the sketch group HBAM. In the same first-person interview, she explained that acting work was developing before she decided to try stand-up:
“While I was at Trinity I was in a sketch group called HBAM with some fellow insecure dopes. We had a few solid years messing about and most of us have gone on to have careers in writing or comedy in some form. I started stand-up a couple of years ago, the acting was chugging along nicely and I knew if I didn’t give it a go, I’d regret it. It’s a very different kettle of fish to acting but requires an equal amount of dedication and sleepless nights.”

What is Aisling Bea known for?
This Way Up
Bea created, wrote and starred in Channel 4’s This Way Up. The comedy-drama follows Aine, a language-school worker trying to rebuild her life after a mental health crisis, while her sister Shona navigates decisions of her own. Channel 4’s 2021 interview with Bea describes the series and her roles in making it. Its story mixes comedy with emotionally difficult subject matter; it is a fictional drama, not a clinical account of mental health.
Stand-up and television comedy
Bea’s official video index lists clips or appearances connected with The Comedy Lineup, Live at the Apollo, Taskmaster and QI, alongside material from This Way Up. These examples show her work across scripted performance, stand-up and panel comedy; the index is selective, not a complete filmography.
