Two days later, her father, actor Robert De Niro, publicly expressed his support for her as his daughter.
What Airyn De Niro said about coming out as trans
In her April 29, 2025, interview with Them, Airyn discussed her transition in her own terms. The interview followed tabloid coverage of paparazzi photographs taken in March. She said those outlets had not contacted her and that she wanted to tell her story herself.
Airyn described the difference between being photographed and feeling understood: “There’s a difference between being visible and being seen. I’ve been visible. I don’t think I’ve been seen yet.”
She also spoke about the role models who influenced her, including Black women and openly trans women, and described her own experiences of exclusion around race, body size and gender expression. These are her personal reflections, not claims about every trans person.

What she shared about her family and childhood
Airyn is the daughter of Robert De Niro and actress Toukie Smith. Them reported that she was born in 1995. Airyn said her parents tried to give her a private and relatively normal childhood. In a statement quoted by The Guardian, she said: “I am grateful that both my parents agreed to keep me out of the limelight. They have told me they wanted me to have as much of a normal childhood as possible.”
What Robert De Niro said in support
After Airyn’s interview appeared, Robert De Niro issued a public statement reported by Them on May 1, 2025. “I love and support Airyn as my daughter. I don’t know what the big deal is… I love all my children.” The sequence matters: Airyn spoke first, and her father’s statement followed.

What Airyn said about transition and representation
The Them profile says Airyn began hormone therapy the previous November. That detail is part of her account in the interview; it is not medical advice or a prescription for anyone else. She also discussed wanting to pursue success on her own merit, including auditioning for acting and video game roles. The profile describes her as an aspiring model and voice actor who is studying to become a mental health counselor.
For context on representation in film, the profile attributes a statistic to GLAAD’s 2024 Studio Responsibility Index: trans women accounted for 1% of LGBTQ+ characters in the 256 films analyzed. The figure applies to that defined group of films and characters, not to all film and television or to society as a whole.

Later update on her father’s support
In an October 2025 follow-up, Airyn described her father’s support as ongoing and said they had discussed her transition during a therapy session. That later account adds context to the May statement; it was not part of her original April announcement.
