Before Sanju revisited Sanjay Dutt’s life for a new generation, the 1981 film Rocky marked his Bollywood debut. Directed by his father, Sunil Dutt, it introduced him as a young man searching for the truth about his past—and gave Dutt, as he later recalled, “a real sense of being an actor.”
What was Rocky about?
Rocky is a Hindi action drama about Rakesh, known as Rocky D’Souza, a young man who discovers the truth about his past and sets out to avenge his father’s murder. Apple TV India lists the film at 2 hours 31 minutes and names Sunil Dutt as director. Apple TV India’s catalog entry lists Hindi audio and English SDH subtitles.

The film that marked Dutt’s Bollywood debut
Rocky was Sanjay Dutt’s Bollywood debut, not necessarily his first appearance on screen in any capacity. He played the title character, Rakesh/Rocky D’Souza. The cast also included Sunil Dutt, Reena Roy, Tina Ambani—credited in some historical sources as Tina Munim—Ranjeet, Aruna Irani, Shakti Kapoor, Amjad Khan and Raakhee. The Indian Express’s anniversary report identifies the film as his debut and records his later reflection on it.
When was Rocky released?
The date depends on the source. The Indian Express reported May 8, 1981, in its coverage of Dutt’s 37th-anniversary post; Scroll also places the release on May 8, five days after his mother Nargis died. Moviebuff, however, lists April 26, 1981, as the India-wide theatrical release. Moviebuff’s record does not explain the difference, so the available sources do not establish whether the dates represent different release milestones or an error.

How Sanjay Dutt remembered his first film
On May 8, 2018, Dutt marked the anniversary in a social post reproduced by The Indian Express: “A film which gave me a real sense of being an actor is Rocky. Today marks 37 years of it and when I look back, my heart fills with gratitude for all the love and appreciation I have received over the years.” The remark makes Rocky more than a career-start date in retrospect: it was the film Dutt himself singled out as formative.

Released in 2018, Sanju renewed attention to the beginning of Dutt’s film career and the story around it. Its release was not simultaneous everywhere: Box Office Mojo lists June 28, 2018, as its earliest APAC/EMEA release date, while market dates varied. The listing gives the film a runtime of 2 hours 35 minutes. In that retrospective moment, Rocky offered a concrete starting point: a debut directed by Dutt’s father, followed decades later by Dutt’s own account of what the experience meant to him.
