Towards Zero is a three-part, 2025 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 1944 novel, and its strongest assets are its ensemble cast and atmospheric period setting. Anjelica Huston makes a commanding Lady Tressilian, while Matthew Rhys leads a knotty investigation as Inspector Leach. The trade-off is pace: this is better approached as a deliberately unfolding Christie puzzle than as a high-speed crime thriller.
What is Towards Zero about?
Set in England in 1936, the series brings tennis star Nevile Strange, his former wife Audrey and his new wife Kay to Gull’s Point, the seaside home of Lady Tressilian. When a murder turns the house party into an investigation, Inspector Leach must untangle old relationships, rivalries and competing suspicions. The mystery’s appeal depends on watching those tensions accumulate, so it is best to go in without seeking out the solution.
The three-part limited series was adapted by Rachel Bennette and directed by Sam Yates. Mammoth Screen produced it with Agatha Christie Limited for BBC One and BritBox International. BBC One broadcast it from 2 to 16 March 2025.
Who is in the cast?
| Actor | Role |
|---|---|
| Anjelica Huston | Lady Tressilian |
| Matthew Rhys | Inspector Leach |
| Oliver Jackson-Cohen | Nevile Strange |
| Ella Lily Hyland | Audrey |
| Mimi Keene | Kay |
The supporting cast includes Anjana Vasan, Clarke Peters, Jack Farthing, Grace Doherty, Adam Hugill, Jackie Clune and Khalil Gharbia. The ensemble is a major part of the series’ appeal: the characters arrive with history and unresolved friction, giving the story more to work with than the mechanics of the crime alone.

What works: the performances and atmosphere
Reviews have particularly praised Huston’s Lady Tressilian and the way the ensemble gives the house-party drama its texture. Martin Robinson of The Standard called the ensemble “stand-out,” highlighting Huston, Rhys’s haunted detective, Jack Farthing’s nervy performance and Anjana Vasan’s sharp Mary Aldin. He also praised the show’s mood and darker noir edge. Lucy Mangan of The Guardian likewise emphasized Huston’s commanding presence and saw the adaptation as a traditional Christie puzzle.
The period setting helps make Gull’s Point feel like a sealed social world: the characters’ connections matter as much as the clues. The result is a mystery shaped by performance and atmosphere, not simply by the race to identify a culprit. These are critical judgments, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the same performances equally compelling.

How does the pace affect the mystery?
The main reservation is that the series can feel sedate if you expect a thriller to move at a constant sprint. Helen Hawkins of The Arts Desk also described it as well cast and lavishly produced, but found it “a tad too sedate” for a thriller, with the story working better as an entertaining parlour game. That is a useful guide to expectations: the pleasure is in observing characters, weighing their motives and following the puzzle as it develops, rather than in relentless action or escalating set pieces.
Mangan’s chess-game comparison captures the other side of that approach: she called the adaptation “the TV equivalent of a chess game or crossword made flesh.” If that kind of patient, clue-conscious viewing sounds appealing, its pace can feel like part of the form. If you mainly want a tense, fast-moving crime drama, the same quality may frustrate.

Is Towards Zero worth watching?
It is a good fit for viewers who enjoy Christie adaptations built around a house party, an interlocking cast and a mystery that asks them to consider character as well as evidence. The performances—especially Huston’s Lady Tressilian—and the moody staging are the strongest reasons to watch. Viewers looking for a brisk thriller should temper expectations: the series favours a measured parlour-game rhythm over speed.
