Full spoilers for both finale episodes. “Follow Me My Friend / To Glory at the End” brings the coven to the Road’s final trial and reveals who made it. “Maiden Mother Crone” then rewinds to Agatha’s past with Nicholas Scratch, exposing how the Road legend began—and closes with Agatha as a ghost choosing to stay with Billy.
Episode 8: The final trial—and the Road’s creator
The surviving coven reaches the final Witches’ Road trial, but the apparent finish gives way to a confrontation between Agatha and Rio, who is Death. As Billy’s awareness of his own power grows, the episode reveals that his magic created the Road and its trials during the coven’s journey. It was not an ancient physical passage waiting for witches to find it.
Agatha dies after stepping into the confrontation. Billy and Jennifer survive. The revelation changes how the journey reads: the Road was real in the experience of those who traveled it, but its appearance and trials came into being through Billy’s magic.
Episode 9: How Agatha turned a song into a trap
“Maiden Mother Crone” goes back to Agatha’s life with her son, Nicholas Scratch. The two create the Ballad of the Witches’ Road as a song. After Nicholas dies, Agatha sings it, and another witch asks where the Road is. Agatha sees an opportunity: she turns the story into a lure, using the supposed Road to draw witches into attacks that let her drain their power.

The song therefore has two histories. It begins as a personal creation tied to Agatha and Nicholas, then becomes folklore that Agatha exploits. The Road the coven experiences is not an ancient place preserved by that folklore; Billy’s magic brings it into existence during their quest.
Why does Agatha become a ghost?
After her death, Agatha returns as a ghost and tells Billy that he brought the Road into existence. Billy is horrified by the deaths connected with the trials. Agatha points out that she entered the scheme intending to kill the coven, while acknowledging that Billy’s actions helped Jennifer survive.

Billy is left to reckon with the grief and responsibility bound up in his power. When he tries to send Agatha on to the afterlife, she refuses, saying she is not ready to face Nicholas. Her ghostly presence is not a reversal of her death: she chooses to remain with Billy instead of moving on.
Where does Billy go at the end?
Billy marks the memory of the coven members who died, then leaves with Agatha to search for Tommy. The finale ends by setting up an uneasy partnership between the two, not by restoring the original coven. Billy’s path forward is tied to both the consequences of his magic and the people he has lost.

What the two-episode finale changes
- Episode 8 is the climax: it brings the coven to the final trial and reveals Billy as the creator of the Road they experience.
- Episode 9 is the origin story and coda: it explains how Agatha and Nicholas’s song became a tool of deception, then follows the aftermath of Agatha’s death.
- The Ballad carries both intimacy and danger: it begins as a connection between mother and son before Agatha turns its legend to her own ends.
The show’s fictional Ballad is separate from real-world soundtrack releases. The episode 9 reference records a vinyl soundtrack release featuring versions of the Ballad and selected score tracks; current availability and edition details are not established here.
