As of Amazon MGM Studios’ May 14, 2026 update, casting for the next James Bond film had begun. The studio has not named the next 007, announced a release date, or confirmed when production will start. The confirmed creative team includes director Denis Villeneuve, screenwriter Steven Knight, producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, and executive producer Tanya Lapointe.
What “moving forward” means
The meaningful change is that the project has reached casting. Amazon MGM said the search for the next Bond was underway, while declining to comment on specific casting details during the process. That is progress, but it is not confirmation that an actor has been selected or that filming is imminent.

The five-year framing refers to the calendar interval since No Time to Die closed Daniel Craig’s tenure as Bond in 2021. It does not mean the new film has been in production for five years, nor does it signal a 2026 release.

Amazon MGM announced Pascal and Heyman as producers in March 2025, naming Pascal Pictures and Heyday Films as their respective production companies. The studio announced Villeneuve as director in June 2025; the May 2026 update added Knight as screenwriter and confirmed that casting had begun.

Villeneuve said he was a “die-hard Bond fan” and described the role as both a major responsibility and an honor. His appointment establishes the director, but the studio’s update does not describe the story or indicate whether this film will connect to earlier Bond films.
Who is the next James Bond?
No actor had been named in the reviewed official update. Amazon MGM’s statement was explicit that it would not discuss specific casting details while the process was underway. Names circulating elsewhere should therefore be treated as speculation unless the studio confirms a casting decision.

When will the next James Bond movie be released?
No release date or production start was announced in the reviewed official update. The Associated Press reported in June 2025 that a 2027 release might be possible if production began the following year. That was a conditional forecast at the time, not a scheduled release, and it does not establish the film’s current timing.

On March 24, 2025, a joint venture involving Amazon MGM Studios, Michael G. Wilson, and Barbara Broccoli closed to house the James Bond intellectual-property rights. They remain co-owners of the franchise, while Amazon MGM gained creative control. Wilson and Broccoli said they were stepping back from producing the Bond films.

Wilson said he was leaving production after nearly 60 years of involvement to focus on art and charitable projects, and that he and Broccoli agreed it was time for Amazon MGM to lead Bond into the future. The arrangement explains the studio’s leadership; it does not itself confirm casting, a plot, or a schedule.
