Four AEW stories stand out from 2024: Hangman Adam Page versus Swerve Strickland, Toni Storm versus Mariah May, Bryan Danielson’s final full-time run and world-title pursuit, and Will Ospreay versus MJF. This is an editorial shortlist, not an official AEW ranking. Each story offers a different hook: revenge, betrayal, career stakes or a fight over what a championship represents.
How these storylines compare
There is no official AEW measure of storyline quality or fan preference. These picks are judged by character change, how events escalate, whether the payoff lands at a major event, and how clearly a viewer can follow the arc while catching up. Wrestling Inc.’s year-end awards named Storm–May runner-up for Storyline of the Year and noted first-place votes for Page–Swerve; those are that publication’s results, not a consensus ranking. (Wrestling Inc.)
Hangman Page vs. Swerve Strickland: revenge turns personal
The feud’s defining escalation was a scripted wrestling angle: Page burned down Swerve Strickland’s childhood home on the September 4 episode of Dynamite, according to Wrestling Inc. The act pushed their rivalry into deliberately personal territory and set up a steel-cage match at All Out. Wrestling Inc. described the match as one of AEW’s most brutal; that is the outlet’s characterization, not an objective ranking. (Wrestling Inc.)
The story’s strength is the sharpness of its escalation: a grudge becomes an act of revenge, then a violent in-ring reckoning. The home-burning scene should be understood as fictional wrestling storytelling, not a report of a real crime.

Toni Storm vs. Mariah May: a protégé becomes the rival
Mariah May arrived in AEW and attached herself to Toni Storm as a protégé. Their relationship changed as May won the Women’s Owen Hart Cup, betrayed Storm and challenged her for the title at All In, where May defeated her, as recounted by Wrestling Inc. (Wrestling Inc.)
The arc makes its central turn legible: mentorship becomes betrayal, and the student’s rise comes at the mentor’s expense. Wrestling Inc. called the rivalry a major catalyst for May’s rise and its Storyline of the Year runner-up. Those are the publication’s assessment and award result, not an industry-wide verdict.

Bryan Danielson: a world-title challenge with career stakes
Danielson’s 2024 story framed a championship pursuit as a decision about his future. On July 10, he won the Owen Hart Cup and earned a shot at AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland at Wembley. In AEW’s official July 10 Dynamite recap, Swerve put his character’s motivation plainly: “I’m someone that holds onto grudges.”
On July 31, Danielson said his AEW contract was ending and that he had promised his family he would stop wrestling full time. He raised the stakes for All In with a stark condition: “I promise if I don’t win the AEW World Championship, I will never wrestle again!” The quote appears in AEW’s official July 31 Dynamite recap. Wrestling Inc. reports that Danielson beat Swerve for the title at All In. (Wrestling Inc.)

The tension came from the contrast between Danielson’s stated promise and Swerve’s position as champion. The story made the result matter beyond who held the belt, while keeping the stakes rooted in the characters’ own words.
Will Ospreay vs. MJF: a title fight over identity
The Ospreay–MJF rivalry tied the International Championship to a clash of characters. AEW’s July 31 recap records MJF insulting Ospreay and presenting himself as an “American hero.” Ospreay responded that MJF had insulted his family and argued that nobody would acknowledge the title while MJF held it. Wrestling Inc. recounts that MJF cheated to take Ospreay’s International title and renamed it the American Championship; Ospreay won it back at All In. (Wrestling Inc.) The feud’s appeal came from connecting personal insults and title identity to a Wembley payoff, rather than treating the championship as a prop separate from the rivalry.
