AEW’s strongest announcers are the ones who make matches easier to follow while giving the promotion a recognizable sound. This ranking focuses on people who called matches or announced competitors in the ring—not every interviewer, host, or language-broadcast contributor listed under AEW’s broad “Broadcast Team” label. It is an editorial ranking, not a claim of measured consensus or a complete archive of every guest appearance.
How this ranking works
The order weighs match storytelling, clarity and energy, chemistry with co-commentators, versatility, continuity, and contribution to AEW’s identity. AEW’s official roster mixes commentators with interviewers and other broadcast roles, so roster inclusion alone does not make someone a match announcer. The available dated records establish roles and stints, not a common performance measure; the ranking is therefore judgment, not statistics.
AEW’s current roster lists Excalibur, Taz, Tony Schiavone, Jim Ross, Ian Riccaboni, Nigel McGuinness, and Bryan Danielson among its broadcast team, alongside ring announcers, interviewers, and language-broadcast names. It is a current snapshot, not a verified all-time list. AEW’s roster

7. Mark Henry
Henry is the least convincing fit for a ranking centered on sustained match commentary—not because the record establishes a negative performance verdict, but because commentary was only one part of his AEW job. In announcing his multi-year deal on June 1, 2021, AEW described him as an expert analyst for Rampage as well as a coach, scout, and mentor. That makes him a documented, mixed-role contributor rather than a long-running core voice. AEW’s announcement

6. Bryan Danielson
Danielson appears on AEW’s current broadcast-team roster, but the available role information does not establish a sustained commentary run comparable with the promotion’s established play-by-play and color voices. His placement reflects that limited documented fit with this specific ranking, not a judgment about his wrestling career or expertise.
5. Nigel McGuinness
McGuinness is also named on the current roster, but the available record here does not set out a dated AEW commentary timeline or provide a basis for comparing his performances across broadcasts. He belongs among the roster’s commentary names; the lower placement reflects the narrower evidence for continuity and role breadth in this account.
Rank #2
4. Jim Ross
Ross belongs in the ranking because he was part of the core broadcast team AEW presented when it announced Schiavone’s full-time signing in August 2019. His place here recognizes that foundational role, while leaving room above him for announcers whose documented AEW work spans more of the promotion’s evolving broadcast identity.
3. Ian Riccaboni
Riccaboni is listed on AEW’s current broadcast roster and merits inclusion among its commentary voices. The available dated material does not establish a complete tenure history or a consistent set of match-by-match comparisons, so this placement is an editorial assessment rather than a claim that one announcer has objectively outperformed another.

2. Taz
Taz earns a high place as a recognizable AEW commentary voice and a current roster-listed broadcaster. His color-commentary role makes him a natural contrast to play-by-play announcers: the job is not simply to describe action, but to help explain its stakes and character. The ranking reflects that distinctive fit with the broadcast format, not an audience poll or numerical score.
1. Excalibur
Excalibur takes the top spot for the role he plays in defining AEW’s match-call identity. He is among the promotion’s established commentary names, and his place at the center of the ranking reflects the editorial criteria of clarity, energy, match storytelling, chemistry, and contribution to AEW’s sound. The source record establishes his roster status, not an objective performance result; the top ranking is a considered critical judgment.

Where Tony Schiavone fits
Schiavone is one of AEW’s most versatile broadcast figures, so placing him in a strict match-commentary ranking requires distinguishing his different jobs. AEW announced his full-time signing on August 26, 2019, to join the television broadcast team of Ross and Excalibur. His official biography says he has broadcast wrestling since 1983, returned to TBS with Dynamite’s October 2019 launch, and works as lead announcer on Collision, analyst on Dynamite and pay-per-view shows, and interviewer across AEW programming. AEW’s signing announcement · Schiavone’s AEW biography
That breadth makes Schiavone an essential AEW broadcast presence, but his work crosses commentary and interviewing rather than fitting one narrow slot. The signing announcement quoted Cody Rhodes calling him “the lead voice of pro wrestling at a time when it was dominating the globe.” That is a tribute, not a comparative measure. AEW’s announcement

Ring announcers and other broadcast roles
Ring announcers perform a different job from commentary: they introduce competitors and deliver in-ring announcements rather than narrating the match continuously. Justin Roberts and Bobby Cruise appear on AEW’s current broadcast-team roster in roles distinct from the match commentators. Interviewers and hosts—including Renee Paquette, Alex Marvez, Alicia Atout, and Lexy Nair on the current roster—are likewise important broadcast contributors, but they are not ranked as match announcers here. The same distinction applies to language-specific broadcast voices listed by AEW.
Because the roster is a snapshot and the available historical records name selected roles rather than every guest or language team, this is a ranking of documented AEW commentary contributors—not a literal accounting of everyone who has ever announced on an AEW broadcast.
